As we transition into the heart of the school year, our students have jumped headfirst into hands-on projects across all 13 industry sectors. The energy and dedication they bring to their learning experiences is inspiring. We take pride in spotlighting our exceptional CTE Students of the Quarter, shining a light on their talent and commitment to their fields of study.
This newsletter serves as a showcase of the remarkable examples of our mission of "Learning by Doing." Let's spread the cheer as we look into the stories, accomplishments, and connections that make the CTE and ROP courses truly exceptional.

Jazarah Riemedio - Medical Assisting & Sports Medicine Athletic, Everett Alvarez High School
Jazarah Riemedio was selected Student of the Quarter and Student of the Month for November by Mrs. Lahodni. "Jaz" is a dual completer. She took Sports Medicine/Athletic Trainer at Everett Alvarez and Medical Assisting at the ROP Center. She is hard working, dedicated, academically excellent, committed, and willing to help others. Jaz aims to study kinesiology at a four-year university, then pursue a career being involved with athletes as a trainer or physical therapist.
Alondra Orozco-López - Advanced Culinary Food Science, Alisal High School
Alondra is an outstanding student who is compassionate, disciplined, determined, caring and willing to learn anything to grow. In class, she is a leader who constantly helps her peers. She helps her teacher by organizing, filing documents, creating labels and covering anything else that might be needed. Alondra not only excels academically, she is also part of the AHS swimming team and Health Club in addition to holding a part time job.
Mathew Puga - Industrial Welding, Mount Toro High School
Mathew has done some incredible work in Industrial Welding this quarter, including his welded ax model (pictured). He has quickly become one of the most skilled welders in his class. In addition, he has become a key leader by modeling responsibility and respect for both classmates and classroom equipment. Mathew is very motivated to find employment after graduation and attend a community college to pursue his career.

Carlos Lopez - EMR/EMT, El Puente School
Rafael Teledano - Industrial Welding, Rancho San Juan High School
Noah Hermosillo - Health Occupations, Salinas High School
Noah's self-starting nature is truly commendable, especially in the context of exploring Healthcare. His drive and initiative toward learning are invaluable assets that have set him on a trajectory for success. His proactive approach to acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge within the Healthcare industry is a testament to his dedication and passion for learning. In an industry as vital and diverse as healthcare, where continuous learning and adaptability are key, Noah's proactive approach positions him as a promising candidate for his future endeavors within the Healthcare industry.

Washington Middle School - College & Career Labs
WMS's College & Career Ready Labs prepare students for careers in healthcare - from Biomedical Engineering to Veterinary Medicine. The Emergency Medical Technician Lab has been especially popular and examines the roles and responsibilities of an EMT as they perform CPR, utilize an AED, dress wounds, stabilize limbs, and assess burns. Such programs instill a sense of responsibility, empathy, and critical thinking in students.
Everett Alvarez High School - Cinema Arts Program
Students from EAHS's Cinema Arts class had the opportunity to produce promotional videos for Salinas Adult School. Students interviewed more than 20 individuals for the project, honing their communication skills and gaining insights into different perspectives and roles. These students also visited Cook's Photography, an iconic local company, where they received training on photography and lighting techniques in a century old studio.
North Salinas High School - Restaurant Careers
Students participated in "Build Your Own Restaurant," an immersive, hands-on experience that encapsulates the intricate workings of a restaurant. Divided into teams of four—comprising a chef, sous chef, dishwasher, and server—students delve into the realm of culinary arts and service provision. Their task was to prepare a four-course meal and simulate a restaurant for their guests from the community.
Salinas High School - Pre-Engineering Concepts
Senior Jason Tavares had the opportunity to explain to his peers how the hydraulic system was designed in this Classic 56 Chevy Belair Lowrider. He emphasized the importance of safety through the use of electrical kill switches and fire suppression and demonstrated the hydraulic system in action!
Mission Trails - Medical Assisting Students Gain Hands On Experience
Practical training in eye and ear examinations is crucial for early detection of hearing and vision issues. Students in Medical Assisting learn to use the Snellen chart for visual acuity assessment and engage in audiometry screening for evaluating hearing abilities.

Alisal High School - Engineering Academy "WINS BIG"
Alisal High School Engineering Academy students participated in the Naval Postgraduate School Design Challenge and won the "Global Solution Grand Champion" award, a remarkable achievement! The $2000 cash prize is a wonderful acknowledgment of their hard work and ingenuity. This accomplishment not only reflects positively on the students but also on the school's commitment to fostering excellence in engineering education.
NSHS - Graphic Design Students visit San Jose
North Salinas High School Graphic Design students got the opportunity to visit the San Jose Art Museum and San Jose State University. Exploring the museum offered students a chance to witness diverse art forms and creative inspirations, fostering their artistic perspectives and understanding of design elements. Visiting the SJSU Campus, discovering hidden gems like the secret door in the library, and taking a campus tour gave students an insight into the academic environment and resources available.
MTROP - Dental Students visit local elementary school
NSHS - Health Academy tours Salinas Valley Health
North Salinas High School students embarked on a comprehensive tour of the entire hospital. The highlight was exploring various laboratories, observing bacteria cultures, and engaging in discussions with lab scientists about potential career paths in microbiology. They also had the opportunity to visit the X-ray lab, where a former CTE student, now a lab technician, provided valuable insights into procedures and the necessary protective gear.

February is CTE Month
Celebrating Career Technical Education (CTE) during the month of February is a wonderful initiative by SUHSD, aligning with nationwide efforts to acknowledge the pivotal role of CTE in shaping the future workforce. Throughout the month, a variety of events will be held at MTROP and across the district at each school. Showcasing the diverse opportunities and pathways available to our students. These events include MTROP tours, Virtual Career Days, CTE Parent Extravaganza Night, Career Day, CTE Showcase and hands on activities at lunch at various schools.

SkillsUSA
This SkillsUSA Team has nearly 100 SUHSD students in over 30 SkillsUSA contests. The competition season kicks off on January 13th. SkillsUSA provides a remarkable platform for students to showcase their expertise, compete at a high level, and demonstrate the practical application of the skills they've acquired through their Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. Whether it's in fields like automotive technology, culinary arts, graphic design, welding, healthcare, or any other vocational area, each contest allows students to put their training into action, providing students the opportunity to showcase the strength and quality of the CTE programs offered by the SUHSD.
Win or lose, the experience gained from these competitions is invaluable.
FFA - Future Farmers of America
FFA kicks off their season this January. FFA develops members’ potential and helps them discover their talents through hands-on experiences. FFA is an extracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership.
