KEY GUIDELINES TO KEEP EVERYONE HEALTHY
We are currently experiencing a surge in stomach-related illnesses, strep throat, and flu-like symptoms in our school community. To prevent the spread and protect everyone’s health, it is critical that families keep unwell students at home.
See the CVSD Guidelines here: When should I keep my child home?
CCS Community,
By the time we return to school next week, we’ll have already turned the calendar to February. January brought its challenges as many in our community navigated illness, but it also highlighted the care and support we show for one another. Through it all, we saw students, staff, and families looking out for each other with a spirit of kindness and resilience. We’re hopeful that the weeks ahead bring renewed energy and good health for all.
Today, we conducted an options-based safety drill at Charlotte Central School. As part of our commitment to preparedness, we practice a variety of drills throughout the school year. We know that even hearing about these drills can bring up strong emotions, and we want to acknowledge the feelings they may evoke for students, staff, and families alike.
To best support our students across our nine grade levels, we took a differentiated approach:
K-4 students practiced sheltering in their classrooms by closing blinds and locking doors.
5-8 students engaged in facilitated discussions with their teachers about safety protocols and decision-making in different scenarios.
Throughout the drill, our staff approached this practice with great care and thoughtfulness, ensuring that students felt safe and supported. I am incredibly grateful to be part of a community where this level of care is at the heart of everything we do.
Our CCS Safety Committee and Safety Team will review feedback from today’s drill at upcoming meetings to continue refining our approach. If you have any questions or would like more information, please visit the CVSD School Safety webpage or reach out.
Thank you for your partnership in keeping our school safe.
Take good care,
Tim O’Leary, CCS Principal
Beth Slater, CCS Assistant Principal & Director of Student Services
2025 - 2026 KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Charlotte Central School Kindergarten Registration for 2025-2026 will open on Monday, February 3, 2025. Champlain Valley School District (CVSD) is asking families to register their incoming Kindergarten students earlier this year in an effort to get more accurate enrollment numbers for our schools.
If you have an incoming Kindergarten student, that will be five before the CVSD September 1st deadline, please complete the online forms by Friday, February 21, 2025. These enrollment numbers help us to plan our staffing needs for the upcoming school year and help us to coordinate our site visits for placement in the Spring.
If your child is already a part of CVSD schools (Act166 Partner Preschool program), please contact Naomi Strada, CCS Registrar. Naomi is looking forward to hearing from you! You can contact Naomi at (802) 425-6600 or nstrada@cvsdvt.org. She will be happy to help with questions and ensure that your child is on the CCS 25-26 kindergarten list.
We really appreciate your help with registering your child early this year and we’re looking forward to meeting you. This is such an exciting time for you and your child and we are happy to share this experience with you!
The CCS Student Council will be sharing their monthly newspaper, CCS Press, for the community's enjoyment. Check back here monthly for their new editions.

CY MENTORING
As January closes, so does National Mentoring Month. But that doesn’t mean we take away the spotlight. Today, Connecting Youth pairs 184 5th-12th graders with caring and trusted adult mentors. And there are more students on our waitlist than adult mentors available to pair them with. According to Mentor National, one in three young people will grow up without a trusted mentor to turn to for support outside of their immediate family; CY Mentoring exists to foster relationships and help close that gap.
Zack Ackey, a former WCS student, has returned to his school in a new capacity as a mentor to middle school student Quinn Rogers. Here’s a little more about what their mentoring relationship means to them:
Zach - “I find mentoring to be a centering experience. My mentee is kind, funny, competitive, intelligent to name a few of his many great qualities. Spending consistent time with him is a highlight of my week as is. But getting to be there for him as he goes through the middle school experience is something that feels very important in a world where that can sometimes be hard to discern.”
Quinn - “What I get out of being in mentoring is a break from school and anxiety to be with a friend that makes me laugh and is like me. We play games a lot, ping pong and we are the best cooks in the school. I feel more free at mentoring than in regular school, because I can do more with my time and we like doing the same things.”
CY Mentoring welcomes all community members to explore our program. If you’re interested, please contact one of our school Mentor Coordinators to coordinate an informational meeting.

PRE-KINDERGARTEN LOTTERY IS NOW OPEN FOR 2025-2026!
The CVSD Early Education Program is now accepting applications for a random prekindergarten lottery drawing for the 2025-26 school year. This lottery is for an opportunity to enroll in one of our school-based classrooms which runs 4 partial days per week. Our school-based prekindergarten classrooms are 5 STARs, licensed early education programs that provide play-based, developmentally appropriate environments for all children in an inclusive setting. Our curriculum is based on the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS).
Our programs follow the CVSD school calendar. Children who will be age 3 or older by September 1, 2025, who are not eligible for kindergarten, and live in the communities of Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, St. George, and Williston are eligible to enter the lottery. Families who are selected for the lottery and choose to enroll their child in a CVSD program access their Act 166 publicly funded prekindergarten funds for the school-based program.
All applications must be received by February 7, 2025, and are located on the CVSD Early Education website under PreK Enrollment. Paper applications are available upon request.
For additional information, questions about our program, or any concerns about your child’s development, please visit our website or contact Director of Early Education, Erin Gagne at egagne@cvsdvt.org. Our Early Education team is also available for developmental screenings in the areas of communication, social-emotional development, motor skills, adaptive development, and cognition. More information about an Early Multi-Tiered System of Supports is also available on the website.
We welcome your feedback at any time. Please select your topic below and send your thoughts our way. If you don't see your topic listed, choose "General Questions." All feedback will be routed to the appropriate district team members, who will follow up with you within 3 business days. CVSD is committed to connecting with students, families, staff, and community members to provide exceptional and equitable experiences.
HOUSEHOLD INCOME FORM
