March 2021
News from Dr. Holcomb
Thank you to everyone that participated in parent/teacher conferences. We are looking forward to the day when we can meet with you all in person to talk about your child's progress, but appreciate everyone's flexibility with our virtual protocols. Our teachers are expected to have 100% participation so we will continue to be working to get in touch with parents who missed the conference opportunity.
ELPA testing
Students in our English Language Learner (ELL) programs started taking the ELPA21 test today. Our testing window is March 1st-March 12th. It is required that we assess all of our students who are in our ELL programs as well as any students who have waived services. Students in grades K-5 will be taking tests on the computer in the areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
What can parents do to help their child do well on the tests?
· Make sure students are to school on time
· Have your child dress comfortably
· Stick to normal bedtime and breakfast routines
· Be a positive cheerleader as they prepare each day

We look forward to a great day meeting all of our incoming Bryant Bears! Students will need to be 5 years old by September 15, 2021 to register.
Preschool
SCCSD is now accepting applications for students to attend preschool for the 2021-22 school year. Students must be 4 years old by September 15 and be an Iowa resident. The application can be found on the district website under preschool. You can also call our office at 712-279-6819 for assistance.
Reminder
We are still not able to allow birthday treats into the building. An exception was made at Valentine's day to help students have a more typical celebration. The COVID cleaning protocol that has to occur when food is consumed in the classrooms is much more rigorous than our normal COVID cleaning protocol. Not only does the process take twice as long, it is also not as safe for our students to be around, especially when food is present. I appreciate your help in following this protocol. I am hopeful that as we roll into next school year this might be able to go back to something more normal.
I hope you are all enjoying this weather. Let's hope that March coming in like a lamb does not mean it is going to go out like a lion!
Building Goals-Math
Below you will see our recent data that shows where our students started in the fall on their FAST Math assessments and where they are now based on the winter testing we just completed in February. As a reminder our goal is for our building proficiency to increase by 7% from fall to spring. You can see in the graph below our scores increased by 3.07%. Specific information to your child was shared with you at parent/teacher conferences.
You can see that while we have made growth in most grades, we still have work to do. Our teachers are digging into their classroom data to determine what specifically needs to be done to support students moving forward. This dig will help them to design their instruction for whole group as well as the teacher table. In addition teachers are using the data to help focus their Number Sense routines and Fact Fluency work with students.
Building Goals-Literacy
Below you will see our recent data that shows where our students started in the fall on their FAST Literacy assessments and where they are now based on the winter testing we just completed in mid to late January. As a reminder our goal is for our building proficiency to increase by 10% from fall to spring. Specific information to your child was shared with you at parent/teacher conferences.
You can see from the graph below that we are well on our way to meeting that goal. Our students increased by 7.38%. While we have made growth in most grades, we still have work to do. Our teachers have dug into their classroom data to determine what specifically needs to be done to support students moving forward. We have used this data along with other data sources to revamp our WIN (What I Need) interventions. We are also focusing on our explicit instruction at the teacher table during our literacy rounds as we move into spring.
