Short Avenue IB Learners Strive to Be...
Mr. Lamb's Updates
Happy Weekend Short Avenue Families and Friends!
I want to thank too many people for well wishes this week from taking my youngest off to college - yes, we are empty nesters and yes, it is weird - to being honored as one of a select group of LAUSD Principals to be recognized for October’s Principal Month. I saw a video from our first school-wide assembly of the congratulations from our community. It is my pleasure to lead Short Ave and I have no illusions or delusions about how the great work is achieved - it is through the tireless efforts of my teachers and my staff and our community. I accept the honor and am excited to welcome a Principal for a Day community partner but I know it takes a village and I congratulate us all!
Speaking of our neighborhood and our community and our village I give enormous gratitude for the crew of students and parents and community volunteers who came out Saturday morning to beautify our campus. From gardening to painting to pressure washing and more we are excited about our Fall refresh.
Unfortunately, I must also share with our community that I received several complaints from our neighbors this week about parking. We are going to work to see how to incentivize or reward those who park further and walk in the mornings or at dismissal. For now though, I am asking, encouraging, and imploring all who are driving to be mindful of our neighbors and the community and to practice the Golden Rule. We have had cars parking in the red which is not safe. We have had cars parking and blocking driveways or access to garages in the alley. I know we are parking just for a minute or a moment but that short time for you is an inconvenience to others and I am guessing we would not like having our own driveways or garage access blocked. Please arrive a little earlier. Please park deeper in the neighborhood. Please be mindful of others. And we will continue to investigate a way to honor those committed to the effort.
Finally, on Monday I am hosting my first Morning Brew with Mr. Lamb informational meeting. The meeting is an in person event at 8:20 but we are going to attempt a Zoom simulcast as well. My team and I will be sharing information about upcoming events, attendance, our IB program, and parent volunteering. There will also be time for questions and conversation. I hope you can join.
Please enjoy the rest of your weekend.
See you Monday!
Mr. Lamb

Rams Reading Challenge for 1st - 3rd Graders
Hopefully, if you have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd grader, you heard the news that there was an Assembly on Tuesday with the LA Rams Mascot Rampage, and a couple LA Rams Cheerleaders! They gave each student in 1st -3rd grade a book about Los Angeles and did a Read-a-Loud. Then came the news that the LA Rams was partnering with Disney and After School All Stars to sponsor a Reading Challenge against 11 other Los Angeles Schools. Our students are tasked to read as much as they can for 45 days, logging their minutes in a Rams Reading Log, and adding them up with their classmates on a Classroom Log.
The school whose 1st -3rd graders read the most minutes will win....drum roll please...4 FREE TICKETS TO DISNEYLAND FOR EACH STUDENT IN GRADES 1st - 3rd!!! SO, if you have a child in 1st, 2nd or 3rd grade, let them read as much as they want and be sure to log those minutes!! Let's with this!!!

Birthday Policy
Families,
We want to remind you of our birthday party policy. In an effort to be equitable and keep our students healthy, we do NOT allow caregivers to send in cupcakes and treats for birthdays. While classes may organize celebrations for various occasions throughout the year, birthday parties should be held outside of school. Parents are welcome to arrange with the teacher to read a story in their child's class, or lead a fun birthday activity. Additionally, parents are welcome to donate something special to the class in honor of their child. We understand that birthdays are special , and every student and staff member will be recognized with a birthday song at our monthly assemblies.
