Core Classroom Updates
English Language Arts
This week we practiced the life skill of flexibility when it came to our first visit to the LMC (Library Media Center). Due to the need for some students to finish the STAR, we will have our first LMC day on Monday. At that time the students will have the opportunity to check out books.
The students received their textbooks this week and have begun working in them. We spent some time becoming familiar with both the textbook and the online text and writing tool (Writable). Then we dove into Unit 2 – “Take Control”. The students will begin reading the first selection, “Heartbeat”, next week.
In addition, the students recorded their STAR scores in their ELA notebooks. Please talk with your child about his/her score. STAR scores will also be available for you at Friday’s Parent-Teacher Conferences.

ESOL
This has been a great second week of school!! I have enjoyed working with your children. Currently they are working on an "All About Me" google slides. Please help them to insert pictures of their families. I am excited to learn about all of you. This Friday, August 23 is parent/teacher conferences and no school for students. I look forward to meeting you and chatting about what you would like to have your child learn this year.

Math
We began our first math lessons this week, solving problems involving the addition of integers (positive and negative whole numbers). We used temperatures and debt as examples of how we use negative numbers. All the kids understand that the daily math lessons are posted in their Google Classroom and that the daily homework assignments are included in the daily lesson. The kids also know that they'll have access to an online math book, so if they forget to bring home their math book, they can use the online math book: read the questions and complete their homework on a separate sheet of paper. It's been a great first couple weeks of school. Have a great weekend!

Next week on Tuesday we will take a quiz on the first cell lesson, Structure and Function of Cells. Your student should have study materials to prepare for this quiz. We will start lesson two, Cell Structures, on Wednesday.

AVID
All is well in AVID! We have finished our College and Career Readiness Framework unit. We have begun a unit on Organization. This week we focused on contracts in the classroom. We made an acrostic poem for a social contract and asked for your support in signing an AVID contract. We also learned Organization strategies such as time management, agendas, and SMART goals. Starting next week the Organization unit will focus on the implementation of physical student binders.
*We will be handing out AVID binders to all students next week during advisory. We would prefer for students to use these as their AVID binders. However if they already have a trapper keeper they can use these as well.
