Superintendent's Message
Greetings Lakeland Families!
Happy first day of Spring Break! We had several great events at our schools this month. Betty Kiefer hosted the elementary “Idaho Battle of the Books (IBOB). Each elementary school had teams participating. Together, the four members of each team had to read a total of 8 books and know the books well enough to answer questions about the books. This is a fun competition that reinforces the love of reading. It was fun to watch the teams work together to answer the questions quickly. The results for the competition were:
1st place: Athena of Twin Lakes Elementary
2nd Place: Book Slayers of Betty Kiefer Elementary
3rd Place: Word Wizards of Betty Kiefer Elementary
The point spread from 1st place to 2nd was 1 point and from 2nd place to 3rd was 1 point. The competition was very close and we are all very proud of all the teams!
Timberlake Middle School staff and students are infusing their school with a stronger sense of community. They sorted their staff and students into four houses at a high energy event. Their theme is four houses; one family. The staff and students are excited about the events and activities in their future. They will work together to earn house points for academic effort and excellence as well as kindness and teamwork. I am really excited to see where the TMS Tigers go. The opportunities are endless!
We have held two of our five scheduled Town Hall meetings so far. These meetings provide opportunities for our taxpayers to ask questions they may have regarding the upcoming May 20th levy election. Our next Town Hall meeting is scheduled for April 9th at Athol Elementary. The meeting will begin at 5:00 and end at 6:30. We hope you will be able to join us!
We are in the process of making some changes to the way we use Chromebooks in our K-8 classrooms with a focus on limiting the screen time for our students. If you have any questions as these changes are implemented, please be sure to contact your child’s teacher or principal. We continue to fine tune what we do and how we do it to ensure that we are taking the best care of our students.
Have a wonderful spring break! We look forward to seeing our students return to school on Monday, April 7th!
Warm Regards,
Lisa Arnold

Students from North Idaho were invited to participate in the IDX Challenge (Idaho Exhibition of Ideas) sponsored by the Idaho Eco-system and hosted by Twin Lakes Elementary on Friday, March 7th. Students competed with the theme of Agricultural Sciences. The IDX Challenge is a team-based digital design and fabrication competition where students research a problem, interview experts and practice design, iteration, and rapid prototyping skills using 3D printing technology. Teams chose a problem concerning agriculture and presented their idea to a team of judges. Students had speeches, a powerpoint presentation, poster board and their models. Lakeland School District brought home several awards.
Senior Division: Crop Docs - 1st Place
Senior Division (7th - 8th grade)
1st Place - Lakeland Middle School
The Crop Docs with E.SCAPE
We designed a process called E.SCAPE. This process starts by identifying bad bacteria or fungi. Then, radioactive molecules linked to sugar are sprayed on the soil with the sprinklers. A few hours after the plant absorbs the substance, the E. SCAPE drone flies by, scans the field, and creates an image that identifies the problem. This image is sent to the app on your phone or a flash drive and plants are sprayed with a natural solution to heal them.
Senior Division 2nd Place
2nd Place - Timberlake Middle School
The Sprinkler Sensor System.
It works as a sensor that will be put deep underground- about 4-5 feet. The system contains a nearby sprinkler with a pipe that runs to a large above ground water tank. The tank will also have minerals to provide the plant with nutrients.
Junior Division: 2nd Place
Junior Division (5th - 6th grade)
2nd Place - John Brown Elementary
The Apple Saver.
This device holds pheromones to attract Apple Maggot Flies and Codling moths. It then traps the pests and drowns the larva in bacillus thuringiensis.
Junior Division: 3rd Place
3rd Place - Spirit Lake Elementary
Smart Science Squad
The team designed an autonomous drone livestock protection system
Judges Choice - Betty Kiefer Elementary
The Conservers
Passive water collection system for homes from snow and rain to use in gardens.

Twin Lakes Elementary had a record setting McTeacher's Night! They earned $711.24! That is the most Twin Lakes Elementary has raised ever! We are so thankful for the support our McDonald's has given our schools over the years. The first McTeacher's Night was in 2002 and since then, our schools have raised $44,674.29 by "working" at McTeacher's Night.
Not only has this event raised money for our schools, it has reinforced our sense of community. Thank you, Terri and Tim Skubitz for your support!

We will be sharing the running agenda/minutes here. We were not able to post a video for the last meeting due to technical difficulties.
