Ben Ascheman
Position: Middle school choir and general music
Experience: This is my first year teaching!
Education: Saint John’s University
What are your hopes as you join Red Wing Public Schools?
I hope to empower students to use their voice, both for making music, but also for being kind, supportive, and helpful to their classmates. I want to make a space where students feel comfortable being themselves without judgment.
What do you want your students to know from Day 1?
Each student that walks into my room will be accepted for exactly who they are. I am a teacher, but I want to learn something new every day from each of my students so that we can all grow to be better.
When did you realize that you wanted to teach?
When I was in middle school, my choir teacher helped me to find my voice, and gave me tons of confidence to be myself. Ever since then, I knew that I wanted to be a choir teacher, and give students the same opportunity I was given in middle school.
What’s your first day of school memory?
I remember my first day of preschool when I had to give my mom ten hugs while crying before she left the building.

I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. Growing up in my mom’s in-home daycare, I would play “school” with some of the other kids (I may have gotten in trouble for letting them fingerpaint on the walls) and made a library in an extra bedroom.
