SD Met Family Updates
One student at a time
September 1, 2024
Thank you to ArtPower at UCSD!
Big shoutout to UCSD & ArtPower for giving us a private musical performance! On Friday, August 23, artists came to entertain our students with a schoolwide Pick-Me-Up during Advisory out on the lawn. Pick-Me-Ups are part of our Big Picture Learning design, and a way to energize and build community. Lovely!
Important Paperwork - DUE Fri, Sept. 6!
Independent Study Master Agreements
Independent Study Master Agreements are a MANDATORY document for each student which describes their course schedule and the expectations they must fulfill to continue being enrolled at the Met. This document requires a parent/guardian signature; as such, it will be sent home with all students on Wed, Sept. 4, and it MUST BE RETURNED by Fri, Sept. 6, to your student's advisor.
LCFF Forms
Each year, our district collects information from our students' families to support the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). These LCFF forms are one of the MOST IMPORTANT factors in determining the funding that the Met receives. By returning the LCFF form promptly, you are directly impacting our budget and the curriculum, materials, and experiences that we are able to offer YOUR students!
The LCFF form is a VERY SHORT questionnaire that may be submitted through the Parent Portal in PowerSchool or via a parent-specific link in an email from SurveyMonkey. Parents should respond only once per child, and the information is kept confidential.
Please complete the form in PowerSchool as soon as possible. If you do not have a Parent Portal account, please contact Mr. Moravec (jmoravec@sandi.net) to set one up. For any students whose LCFF form has not been received by Wed, Sept. 4, a paper form will be sent home with those students for parent/guardian signature, alongside the Independent Study Master Agreement mentioned above. The paper LCFF form must be returned by Fri, Sept. 6 to the advisor.
Thank you for taking this small but critically important step for increasing the funding that goes toward supporting your student and all of our students!
Intern Participation Agreement
A final required document is the Intern Participation Agreement, which serves as your written permission for your student to have an internship. This requires a signature by a parent/guardian. If your student has not yet brought this home, look for this one to be sent home this week on Wed, Sept. 4, and please send it back to school by Fri, Sept. 6.
School News
Labor Day Holiday
Enjoy your three-day weekend! On Monday, Sept. 2, school is closed.
On Tuesday, Sept. 3, all students should attend their internships, or attend school from 8:30 to 11:30 for LTI Gateway to work on finding an internship.
Grading Period Ends September 6
Our first grading period of the semester (P1) ends on September 6, and all teachers will update grades in PowerSchool by the end of the day. Please check in with your student about their grades. Additionally, if they are enrolled in a Mesa College class, especially if this is their first college class, review their Canvas account with them to support their success. (Canvas is the Google Classroom equivalent for Mesa College.)
Back to School Night - Friday, September 13 @ 5:45 pm
Save the date! More details to come!
Picture Day - Friday, September 13 @8:30am
Picture Day starts at the beginning of the school day on Friday, Sept. 13, so students need to arrive on time! Order forms were given to each Advisor to hand out to their students. Please encourage your student to take one home if you are interested in ordering prints.
FAST Reading Assessment - Wed, Sept. 4
The FAST assessment is a standardized test required by our district. It is a reading diagnostic and dyslexia screener that is taken by all 9th graders and English Learners. It is administered once in the Fall and once in the Spring. The Fall assessment will take place on Wed, Sept. 4, during advisory for all 9th graders and English Learner students.

Parent/Guardian Support Needed!
SGT - Site Governance Team
Do you want to be more involved in school decision making? Our Site Governance Team (SGT) is a mix of teachers, students, the principal, and YOU! Our SGT helps advise on curriculum, budget, school policies, and more. We value parent voice in all that goes on, so PLEASE join us. SGT meets once per quarter, or about 4 times per year.
Selection to this committee is by democratic election by the respective constituency group. If you are interested in this committee, please email Justin Schiffer (jschiffer@sandi.net) directly. The deadline for accepting nominations is Friday, September 6. All nominees will be added to a ballot, and that ballot will be sent out via this family newsletter to gather votes. Thank you for making your voice heard!
Support the SD Met Foundation!

Important Facts
Attendance, Absences, Appointments
Good attendance is of the utmost importance for your student's learning. As an independent study school where students only attend their classes three days a week, it is vital that students are on time to EVERY class, EVERY day. Parents/guardians are required to inform our office (619-388-2299 or email Carolyn Dumas at cdumas@sandi.net) if your students will be absent or late. If you wish to request an early dismissal for your student, please notify our office no later than 10am that same day.
Please schedule all medical and dental appointments outside of school hours. We know that appointments can be challenging to get at times, but please do your best to support good attendance for your students so they do not miss any valuable learning at school!
COVID Protocols - What do I do if I get sick?
COVID cases are currently quite high, so we want to share some reminders about what to do if you get sick. Please self-test if you have any COVID symptoms. Test kits are available free of charge in our office. If you do test positive and are feeling sick, please stay home and call in to school to report your absence and positive test. You may come back to school when your symptoms are improving and you have been fever-free for 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication. Upon returning to school, students who tested positive should wear a mask for five days. Masks are available in the office for any student who needs one. Let’s keep each other safe and healthy!
Mental Health Supports
We will be supported again this year by a mental health clinician from Wellness Together. This year, our clinician will be on campus on Mondays from 8:30 to 3:00, starting on September 16. Students who are in need of mental health services may be referred to the clinician for one-on-one support.
Daily Schedule
The daily schedule for the school year is 8:30am to 3:15pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are dedicated to internships, and all students must attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am to 11:30am to work with their advisor on finding an internship placement. As soon as a student has secured an internship, including a signed contract with the mentor, the student may start attending internship on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of coming to campus. Please refer to the Daily Schedule here.
Food on Campus
Free School Meals for All!
As part of the State of California's Universal Meals Program, all students in our school district are eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch at school. Meals will continue to be "grab and go" bags, and this year we have expanded our menu to include hot lunch options for the first time. If you would like your student to receive free meals at the Met, please sign up by emailing our interim administrative assistant, Carolyn Dumas, at cdumas@sandi.net. Students may also sign themselves up with Carolyn in the office.
Meals may be picked up inside K203 (office). Breakfast is served from 8:00 to 8:25, and lunch is served from 12:10 to 12:25. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, lunch is served from 11:30 to 11:45 for any student who wishes to take a lunch at the end of the Gateway class.
Click the links below to see our menus!
Fun fact: California was the first state to pass this legislation and only one of eight states to implement the program so far.
Other Food Options on Campus
Mesa Commons is now open Monday-Friday throughout the school day, serving a variety of hot food options that may be purchased via an app or through one of the kiosks on site. Terrace Cafe in I-400 serves coffee drinks and light fare, and is open Monday-Thursday.
Students are always welcome to bring lunch from home. Some teachers have mini refrigerators, microwaves, and electric kettles in their classrooms that they can share with students, though this is strictly at the discretion of each teacher.
Students are NOT allowed to have food delivered from online delivery services (such as DoorDash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, and similar apps). Though we are located on a college campus, we are officially a CLOSED campus, and students are not allowed on and off campus during school hours without permission, nor are food deliveries or other unauthorized visitors allowed. Please ensure that your students bring food or lunch money so that they can eat well, be healthy, and stay focused on their studies!
Parking Information
Parking Options @ Mesa for the Met
For parents/guardians who need to park on campus, there are two options for free parking:
Limited availability: 1 Hour Visitor Parking in front of the I-400 building.
Obtain a temporary parking permit from the Mesa College Police Office. If entering campus off Highway 163 on Mesa College Drive, you will see a 4-story parking structure on the left. DON’T park in the structure; park in the small lot in front of the building next to it - the Police Office is there. Hours are M-Th 8:00am-5:00pm, Fr 8:00am-4:30pm. Let them know you are visiting the Met and would like a temporary permit.
Student Parking Permits
Students who need a parking permit will need to pick up a Mesa College parking permit application in the office to get a parking permit for the Fall semester. Once you complete the application, take it to the College Police office (Q-100) along with $40 for payment - cash, check, debit/credit card or Apple Pay accepted. If you have a temporary parking permit, it will expire on September 3.
College and Career
Work Permits
If your student is currently employed, they need a work permit. Applications are available online here, or can be picked up from Ms. Mann-Deibert's room. Permits must be signed by a parent/guardian and employers. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Mann-Deibert at gmann-deibert@sandi.net.
Class of 2025
Senior Early Dismissal Policy
As part of supporting our 12th graders in having diverse opportunities for success, the Met has an early dismissal policy for qualified seniors. Students and parents/guardians must submit this Senior Early Dismissal application and await approval by the principal before any early dismissal can begin. Please note that the earliest that seniors may be dismissed is 12:10pm, and early dismissal does not apply on MetUp days (one Friday a month) or other special events that require student attendance until the end of the school day. Please refer to this Senior Early Dismissal Policy document for more details.
