In second grade, students learn to add and subtract numbers by breaking them into parts and combining them to make a whole. A useful method for this is a two-part chart, also known as a "part-part-whole" chart.

Here’s how it works:

• The chart is divided into two sections: "Part 1" and "Part 2," with the total or "Whole" at the bottom.
• Students fill in the parts (the numbers they are adding or subtracting) in the two sections.
• The total (sum) is written at the bottom, showing how the two parts combine to make the whole number.

This visual helps students understand how numbers are combined to form a total. It also supports their number sense and addition skills. Watch the video below to hear from teachers on how it is explained to students in the classroom and practice the concept with your child at home.
