BLACKHAWKS BULLETIN
Week of March 9th
PRINCIPAL PONDERINGS
Good Afternoon,
Our Professional Development Day on March 5th was well spent reviewing student data (e.g. NWEA assessments, STAR assessments, classwork, etc.) Classroom teachers and interventionists worked together to develop plans to help all students meet academic goals. Be sure to ask your child's teacher about how they spend their WIN/Academic Block during the April Parent Teacher Conferences.
The rest of the week featured some exciting visitors including Kailee Larkin, our storytelling artist in residence. Ms. Larkin worked with 1st through 4th grade students on the power of adding vivid sensory details to our stories. There was LOTS of writing happening!
On Thursday and Friday, students in upper grades Spanish classes enjoyed working with high school students from Kimball Union Academy. This has turned into a really fun collaboration that allows students to practice their Spanish speaking skills while playing games led by high school students.
Finally, on Friday morning, our new police chief, Erik Gutsfeld, visited PES with Officer Rob. Students and staff gave him a warm Plainfield welcome!
As we look ahead, please note the following:
District meeting on Saturday, March 15 at 9 a.m. Voters will decide on the annual expense and revenue budget as well as the Middle School warrant. If you did not have an opportunity to attend one of Dr. Leggett's info sessions, here is a LINK to a recording.
As we prepare for Scholastic Book Fair (beginning NEXT week), please be sure to check out the flyer below with details on adding money to your child's account. Thanks to a successful coin drive, we have funds available for all students who need them. Please don't hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Foley (ffoley@plainfieldschool.org) if you would like to learn more.
Speaking of Mrs. Foley, by now you've received her email update about next year. She has accepted a position at Fall Mountain High School. We wish her well in her new position and know her family will love having her a little closer to home. She will be with us through the end of the year and will help us transition to a new counselor. We've already posted the position for the 25/26 school year and I am interested to include parent and student representation in the hiring process. If you are interested in serving on the hiring committee, please reach out to me directly at abucklin@plainfieldschool.org.
On a totally different note, with forecasted warmer temperatures and their impact on our roads, please be sure to pay close attention to bus route updates. Consolidation of stops at one point in the route can change your child's drop-off/pick-up times by as much as 10 minutes.
And finally, speaking of warmer temperatures, please refrain from allowing your child to wear shorts at least until there is no snow on the ground and temperatures are consistently warmer.
Thanks and have a great night,
Audra

OFFICE NOTES
Reminder For Bus Riders- Some routes have been altered due to muddy roads. Therefore, the buses make stops go quicker than usual. Please make sure you are at your child's bus stop at least 10 minutes before the time. We appreciate your cooperation!
Mud season will be here before we know it!
As we start to thaw out from the winter tundra, mud season is fast approaching. This means the playground and areas where our students play can get quite wet. We encourage you to pack rain boots and extra socks so your kiddo's feet aren't a sopping wet mess throughout the day! We also need students to continue dressing for the weather. We aren’t ready for shorts yet! We need students to be dressed appropriately in the event we need to be evacuated from the school.
Important Reminders from the Plainfield School Office
Every year on March 21, people all around the world come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks. March 21 is symbolic because people with Down syndrome have 3 copies of their 21st chromosome. Socks were chosen because the karyotype of Down syndrome chromosomes actually looks like mismatched socks! Join Plainfield in ROCKING YOUR SOCKS!
Substitute Teachers Needed for 2024-2025 school year
The Plainfield School is seeking individuals who would be comfortable working with K-8th grade students in our building during the 2023-2024 school year. Applicants must be able to follow teacher substitute plans, be dependable, and enjoy working with children. If you are interested in applying, please contact Katie Lowery in the office at (603) 469-3250.

2024-2025 Lost and Found…please take a look at our lost and found site and see if your children are missing anything. We already have some clothing hanging up. Please take a look and if anything looks familiar to your family, have your child stop and take it home.

FROM THE LIBRARY
3/4 CULLIGAN UPDATE
Learning to Self-Regulate
Students in Ms. Culligan's class spend time each week learning to calm their bodies and minds.
FROM THE NURSE
The last few days I’ve been looking into student’s lunch boxes to see what kinds of snacks are coming into the school. I’m happy to report a lot of good healthy snacks are being brought to school in compliance with our Wellness Policy. Snacks such as fruits (oranges, applesauce, strawberries, bananas, grapes, apples, blueberries, blackberries, and melon) veggies (veggie straws, seaweed, cucumbers, and carrots) and some pre-packaged snacks (granola bars, peanut butter crackers, fruit snacks, teddy grahams, muffins, yogurt, and cheese & crackers) are being consumed. That said, a growing number of students are coming into my office looking for more. Please remember as your student grows their requirements for food also grow so add more snacks to lunchboxes to keep those bellies from growling! (And, if your student is the one packing their lunch, do a quick check from time to time to be sure they are packing enough to get through their day).
The week back from winter vacation always brings a new crop of illnesses into the school. This week there have been a few diagnosis of flu among our students, both Flu A and Flu B which I find concerning. Flu A tends to be more aggressive and cause more severe symptoms compared to flu B. Be on the lookout for fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue. Other symptoms include: chills, headache, fatigue, dry cough, runny nose, body aches, loss of appetite, sneezing and abdominal pain possibly with vomiting. And don’t forget the 24-hour rule. Basically, the student needs to be feeling better for a solid 24 hours before returning to school. Details are in the chart below.
