Book Fair
Get ready—the Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school!
This is a great opportunity to connect with your child over the thrill of bringing home new books to dive into again and again. Studies show that kids read more when they choose books for themselves. And fostering a love of independent reading leads to a wide variety of benefits—including academic success and improved mental health. Here’s everything you need to know about the Book Fair:
Dates: October 7-9 from 3:15-4:00; October 9 from 5-8; and October 10 from 11-4
Location: WMS Library
There’s even more info on our school’s Book Fair homepage: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/westsidemiddleschool2
While you’re there, set up a Book Fair eWallet, the digital payment account that allows your child to shop for books at the Fair without cash. Then share your eWallet link so friends and extended family can add funds. When you fund an eWallet, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to a giving initiative called Share the Fair™. Your contributions directly support our students who need help buying books from the Fair. Many of us still remember the rush of finding the perfect book at a Scholastic Book Fair. I hope you’ll join your child at our school’s Fair and share a reading experience they’ll remember forever. Happy reading,
PS: Need one more reason to visit the Book Fair? Every purchase at the Fair benefits our school!

Attendance
FALLING INTO GOOD ATTENDANCE
As the weather cools and the leaves begin to turn we start turning our attention to the upcoming Fall season. First quarter will soon be behind us and we have begun to see some trends with students being late to school or absent altogether. "Falling" into good attendance starts at home. Role modeling to students that school is important by encouraging them to be here every day, and on time, is an important life lesson they will carry into their lives and careers.
Students can also see that parents are invested in their education when parents engage with their teachers, whether by touching base throughout the year, and/or attending Parent Teacher Conferences (PTC). This year, Vala's Pumpkin Patch has graciously donated two tickets (an $85.98 value) to help us "fall" into good attendance in the second quarter. Any parent that attends PTC, whether in person or virtually, will have the opportunity to have their name in a drawing for the Vala's tickets to enjoy the many fall activities.
We greatly appreciate the support of our families as we strive to improve the attendance of each of our students. As always, we believe that the school and the student/family are all a team. If there are any barriers to attendance that the school can assist with, please reach out to the Dean, Counselor or Social Worker.
Westside We-Side
WE-SIDE COMMUNITY EVENTS CALENDAR
We are excited to announce the launch of our WE-SIDE Community Events Calendar. This calendar includes dates and times for local events and community offerings.
While we are not a partner, sponsor, or organizer of the listed events, we’d like to share them with you as part of our WE-SIDE initiative, which highlights opportunities available in the greater Omaha community.
Started in the summer of 2020, WE-SIDE stands for Welcoming Equity Support Inclusion Dignity Everyone. This initiative was created to foster a district community where everyone feels valued, connected, and respected. The initiative seeks to build a supportive environment that honors the dignity of every individual, creating a sense of belonging and unity within the Westside community.
The events are listed on the right-hand side of the WCS website homepage. Click on each event for specific logistical information. However, for details or inquiries regarding any of these events, please contact the official event organizers directly.
We are excited to share these opportunities with you and hope you find something new to explore with friends or family members
