MENSA for Kids' Excellence in Reading
The MENSA Foundation has developed this reading program to encourage the joy of reading. Students earn a commemorative certificate in recognition of their achievement. Select a list from the grade-level links listed at the bottom of the website. Remember to read to the level of your ability or interest, regardless of your age or grade level.
2x2 Reading List: 2 years old to 2nd Grade
The 2X2 Committee‘s charge is to produce a list of 20 recommended books for children, age two to grade two. The 2X2 Reading List is compiled yearly by selected members of the Children’s Round Table, a unit of the Texas Library Association.
Texas Bluebonnet Award: 3rd-6th Grades
Each year, 20 books are chosen as the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List by the TBA selection committee. If students read a minimum of five books from the current master list (or have the books read aloud to them), they have the opportunity to vote for their favorite title during the month of January each year. The author of the book receiving the most votes statewide is declared the winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award.
Texas Lone Star List: 6th-8th Grades
The Texas Lone Star List is a recommended reading list developed by public and school librarians from the Young Adult Round Table. The purpose of the list is to encourage students in grades 6, 7, or 8 to explore a variety of current books. [Description from www.txla.org]

Low-Tech Games & Activities
Here are a few other ideas that require little to no technology:
- Read EVERY day! Read non-fiction, fiction, ebooks, poetry, newspapers, and read out loud! For most children, twenty minutes is an appropriate amount of time to read for a child who is an independent reader.
- Cook with your children. This is one of the best ways to integrate math, reading, and following directions. Let your child design the menu too! Help your child put together their favorite recipes in a cookbook.
- Learn a new word each week! Hang it on the fridge and see who can use it the most times throughout the week.
- Family Game Night!
- Play quick games with flashcards like Math War or Concentration to keep math skills sharp.
