Mustang Memo - 8/21/20
Message from Principal Ali - Student Supply Pick-Up and Material Drop-Off
Dear Mann Families,
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we have been working through the many logistical items related to the beginning of the school year. Mann staff has been preparing supply kits for students to pick up on August 27th. Inside these kits will be (workbooks, manipulatives, additional supplies, etc.) Families will also be able to grab the school supply kits that were ordered in the spring of last school year.
If you have more than one student at Mann, you will pick up belongings for all of your children during the time of your oldest child. During this time, you will also return any library or classroom books. Please place them inside of a bag labeled with your child’s name on it.
The following times have been established for supply pick-up and drop-off.
Thursday, August 27th:
5th Grade - 8:30-9:30
4th Grade - 9:30-10:30
3rd Grade - 10:30-11:30
2nd Grade - 12:00-1:00
1st Grade - 1:00-2:00
Kindergarten - 2:00-3:00
For those that already have an iPad, you will be keeping your devices unless you are leaving D97. If you are leaving the district, you will return your device, your charging cord, and plug.
This will be done in a drive-thru fashion as we adhere to the social distancing guidelines established by Governor Pritzker. In order to do that, we need your help. We are asking that all parents please follow the guidelines below to ensure a successful, safe exchange of items.
Families will arrive during their designated time and drive through the front of the building on Kenilworth. This is our main school entrance: 921 N. Kenilworth Ave - Door #1
Write your student(s) name and grade using large print on a piece of paper and place it on the passenger side near the windshield.
When you arrive, you should remain in your car and if possible pop your trunk without leaving your vehicle. A Mann staff member or helper will bring your child(rens) supplies to you and place them in the truck.
If a parent/guardian needs to open the trunk manually, please get out of the vehicle, manually open the trunk, and get back in the vehicle.
Once the parent/guardian is back in the vehicle, the school staff will place the items in the trunk.
Any library books you are returning should be placed in a bag and labeled - Library Books. A staff member or helper will remove these items from your trunk.
Any borrowed classroom materials or classroom library books should be placed in a separate bag and labeled with your child's former classroom teacher's name and grade. A staff member or helper will remove these items from your trunk.
In the event you will not be driving, we ask that you adhere to social distancing guidelines and wait patiently for a staff member to exchange materials with you.
Please wear a face covering when you come for pick-up. You will remain in your vehicle at all times but will be communicating with staff/volunteers, so a face covering is needed.
If you are unable to come during supply distribution, please contact Mr. Ali at hali@op97.org or the main office.
*During this time frame, students in K-3 will also be receiving their iPads from the district. Please be sure to connect the iPad to wifi when you get home so the apps we’re preloading finish uploading and updating. After connecting it to wifi, please wait for further guidance from your homeroom teachers about iPad usage. We will be conducting an iPad boot camp with all students at the beginning of the year.
**Additionally, we will be collecting bottle caps for our Plastic Cap Collection to build our Buddy Bench. Our team is requesting that all Plastic caps/lids be clean and dry.
Please feel free to reach out to me (hali@p97.org) or your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you in advance for your patience, understanding, and teamwork as we all work together to get the necessary materials in our students' hands to kick off the year in the safest way possible.
Best,
Principal Ali

Jordan Hwang - Kindergarten
My name is Jordan Hwang and I will be teaching kindergarten at Mann this year. This will be my seventh year teaching. The last 6 years I have been teaching kindergarten in Columbus, Ohio. I love teaching kindergarten and helping your student become independent learners and develop a love for learning, reading, and discovery. My husband and I moved to Chicago this summer and we are so excited to have a new adventure. I enjoy playing board games with my friends and traveling the world with my husband. Even though this was not the kindergarten year you had imagined for your children, I am going to work hard to make it a positive and memorable experience. I am looking forward to meeting your children and working with you this year.
Christina Gonzalez - Resource Room
I have been a special educator for 10 years now. I was working in CPS during that time but joined Oak Park this past January. In that time, I have worked with grades K-8 at one point or another. Six of those years I was in a self-contained classroom and I was a resource teacher the other four years. I am an animal lover. I have a cat and a dog. I also have 11 year old twins, one boy, and one girl. I am originally from Rochester, NY, but I have lived in Chicago for 11 years now. I look forward to working with you!
Caroline Carbray - Resource Room
Hi! My name is Caroline Carbray and this is my first year as a Special Education Resource Teacher at Mann Elementary. Previously, I was a Special Education Teacher at Elizabeth Ide Elementary in Darien, IL for 4 years. I received a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education at Illinois State University in 2016 and a Masters in Instructional Technology at Northern Illinois University in 2019. I live in Chicago with my kitten, Logan and love enjoying the city outside as much as I can! I believe every child has the ability to thrive personally and academically when they feel respected and a sense of belonging. I look forward to building positive relationships with students and families this coming school year!
Tye Johnson - 4th Grade
Tye Johnson enters her 16th year of teaching, primarily in Oak Park and at Beye School. She received a bachelors in studio art/graphic design from Michigan State University and worked as a graphic designer/marketing specialist. She holds a Master of Art in Elementary Education degree from DePaul University, as well as a Master of Science in Educational Media Design and Technology degree from Full Sail University. A world traveler, Tye spent the last couple of years in Dubai where she served as the Innovative Learning Coordinator for a progressive school. Tye is also an artist with an entrepreneurial spirit, and is committed to teaching her students to explore their creativity and to use their gifts to be social change agents. Her passion lies in empowering people to be who they were created to be and, to this end, she has dedicated her life to finding creative ways to spread love in order to touch and change lives.
John Bagley - 4th Grade
I’m Mr. Bagley, and I am very excited to be joining the community at Horace Mann as a 4th grade teacher. I am the proud owner of a Masters Degree in Teaching along with 8 years of working with families and their students; from preschoolers to highschoolers. Most recently I was the 3rd Grade Gifted Literacy teacher at Bronxville Classical School. In my classroom, even remotely, students will be engaged in activities designed to bring new content to life. I aim to make learning an active process where students are encouraged to discuss their ideas and questions with one another. Outside of the classroom, I love to carve out time for my mostly nerdy hobbies, tv shows, and games. When I'm not teaching I'm probably reading, drawing, or watching the Knicks, Mets, or Jets embarrass the city of New York. Even facing a year full of questions to be answered, I cannot wait to meet and grow with you all this school year!
Zoe Schirmer - 5th Grade
My name is Zoe Schirmer, and I am thrilled to be joining the Mann staff this year! This will be my third year in District 97, having spent two years teaching down the street at Holmes Elementary. Prior to this, I taught English in Greece for six years. In addition, I taught middle school for five years in Des Plaines and recently completed a Master’s in Education from Northwestern University. In my free time, I enjoy gardening, running, improv, and spending time with family.
Griffin Waterman - Building Substitute
I grew up in Chicago and Oak Park and attended Whittier, Emerson (which is now Brooks), and OPRF. After four years at Ohio Wesleyan University I moved back to the area, where I earned my master's degree in American history at Loyola University in 2012. After this, I worked for Chicago Public Radio where I did behind-the-scenes production work for the nationally broadcast Sound Opinions show and then on-air commentary and writing as a senior correspondent for the Music Vox on WBEZ's sister station, Vocalo.
After a couple of years working in radio, I took a job as a special education teacher's aide at Longfellow. I spent four years working as an aide at schools throughout District 97 while I completed a master's degree in elementary education at Dominican University in River Forest. In the three years since getting my teaching license I have taught fourth and fifth grade in Waterloo, Wisconsin. Throughout this entire period I have also worked for the Oak Park Education Foundation as a teacher at BASE Camp (even when I was living in Wisconsin) and as a VEX Robotics coach.
I moved back to Chicago with my wife and two cats earlier this summer, and I am excited to be returning to the district where my career as an educator began. I look forward to beginning my work with all of the great students at Mann!

During its regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 11, the District 97 Board of Education approved a modified calendar for the 2020-21 school year. The first day of school for students will be Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Oak Park and River Forest High School 200 also recently adopted a modified calendar, which shifted the start of their winter break to Dec. 24, 2020. Students will return for Semester 2 until Jan. 11, 2021.
In order to accommodate families with students in both districts, the District 97 Calendar Committee will be reviewing our modified calendar to determine options for aligning our winter break with District 200. Currently, winter break in District 97 is scheduled to begin on Dec. 21, 2020, with students returning on Jan. 4, 2021.
Regardless of the dates for winter break, we plan to hold our first day of school for students on Sept. 1.
We will provide an update to staff and families as soon as possible.
