Dear Sherwood Community,

As we begin the last few weeks of the school year, we focus on the core value of June: Confidence. Each day we discuss ways that we can apply this, and all of our core values to the situations we encounter both at school and at home.

We continue to remind our students about the importance of trying our best and finishing the year strong, Sherwood Strong! We ask that you too, remind your child about the need to finish the year on a positive note, and stay focused as we work towards the finish line.

Congratulations to our Girls on the Run team for finishing their practice 5K this week in the 90 degree heat! They are excited to participate in their upcoming 5K at Polar Park on Saturday, June 10th. Please consider stopping by next weekend to cheer them on!

On Tuesday, June 6th, the Final Leg Torch Run with Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement officers will be coming through our middle schools @ 1:30 PM. Both schools will be on hand to salute our Unified students and teams. Congratulations to both schools on this wonderful accomplishment! All students and staff are asked to wear blue and/or gold.

The Sherwood 5th and 6th grade band, chorus, and orchestra are having their final concerts of the year this week. All performances will take place in the Oak Auditorium and are free and open to the public.

Concert dress for all groups is as follows -

White top (no large, visible logos)

Dark bottom - dark pants or skirt (below the knee or longer)

Dark shoes and socks

All band, chorus, and orchestra members should arrive to Oak 30 minutes prior to their concert start time. Band students will meet in the band room, chorus students will meet in the cafeteria, and orchestra students will meet in the orchestra room.

There will be an informational meeting for any current 6th graders looking to play football next year at Oak on Thursday, June 8, after school from 3:00-3:45 pm in the Oak Cafeteria. Students will walk down after dismissal and enter through the doors by the gymnasium. Students should bring their iPad so they can complete a Google Form. Please email Mr. Dan O’Brien. (dobrien@shrewbury.k12.ma.us) if you have any question or your child cannot attend the meeting.

1. All medications must be picked up at the end of the school year. We cannot store medications at school during Summer. Any medications not picked up will be discarded.
2. All medication orders must be renewed each school year. Medication orders and medication should be brought in on the first day of school. Students are not allowed to transport medications to school, except for Epipens and rescue inhalers that a student carries in their backpack as appropriate. Nurses must be notified of any self-carry medications.

As Dr. Sawyer mentioned in his recent Superintendent's message, Our district's core values call us to "honor each person’s individuality, celebrate our community’s diversity, and support school cultures of mutual acceptance and respect."

For the next two Fridays during the month of June, we would like to celebrate our diverse staff and students by supporting and recognizing the importance of Pride Month.

As a way of showing our support, students and staff will be invited to wear shirts, pants, hats, logo, pin, or any accessories/clothes with various colors. Thank to our GSA Student Voice Crew for coming up with this idea!

Field Day will take place this year on Wednesday, June 14th (rain date- Thursday, June 15th). Please send your child in to school dressed in sneakers and comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather. Please also have them bring a water bottle, and apply sunscreen at home in the morning.

A reminder that If you are interested in volunteering for Field Day with your child's team you need an updated CORI form on file. Please call the Main Office at 508-841-8670 for questions about CORI forms, and contact your child's team teachers if you have questions about volunteering for Field Day.

Our cafeteria will have an optional dessert item (Italian Ice) on the menu for students who are interested.

Students in the Girls on the Run program are requesting donations for a local children's hospital as part of their Community Impact Project. The girls have decided to collect donations for The Jared Box Project. The mission of the Jared Box Project is to entertain and put a smile on the face of children in the hospital. Sherwood students are invited to make a donation to help fill the Jared Boxes.

Donations can be dropped off to the donation box located in the main office until Wednesday June 7th.

The hospital is looking for the following donations:

• The First Years or Bright Starts: infant rattles, teethers, stacking cups, O-balls
• Crayola crayons, markers, colored pencils, window or fabric markers
• LEGO sets or slime supplies
• Fidget items: stress balls, light spinners, pop-its

All items must be brand new in original packaging or with tags. We are unable to accept used items. Cloth items must be in fully-sealed packaging.

WANTED: Missing Books!!! Please help your children look at home for books that they have borrowed from the Media Center. We would like to have all books back as soon as possible. Beginning Tuesday, May 30, the Media Center will be open for book returns only. Students can continue to access SORA or bring a book to school to read. Thank you!

Registration for the Summer Enrichment program is still open and there are many classes still available!

Extended School Care (ESC) is accepting registrations for next year’s program. ESC provides quality before and after school care for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Operated by the Shrewsbury Public Schools, the program is fully funded through parent fees. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where students can engage in enriching activities, participate in recreational programming and socialize with their peers. Time is also set aside each day for students to work on their homework. Our experienced and caring staff members create fun and innovative programming for students of all ages, interests and abilities. We focus on building positive relationships, developing social skills, strengthening self-esteem, and encouraging independence, responsibility and good decision-making. Our programs are located within the school building at Beal, Coolidge, Floral, Paton, Spring and Sherwood.

The before-school program opens at 7:00AM and parents can drop off their child any time between 7:00 and the start of school.

The after-school program closes at 6:00PM, and parents can pick up their child any time between the end of the school day and 6:00PM. You can learn more about the program, including registration instructions and monthly tuition fees on our website.

The SMS PTO works to support the students & teachers of BOTH Sherwood and Oak. Through various fundraising events, we aim to reach a yearly $40,000 fundraising goal.

These funds support: 4 field trips (1 per grade), media center materials (both schools), fees for math clubs and other events, Spelling Bees, funding requests and MUCH MORE!

While many of our events are fundraisers, we also do other events to help support our middle schools communities. Our small PTO team always welcomes grade 5-8 parents at all of our meetings, and to assist with planning and running our annual events:

ABSENT/TARDY

If your child will be absent or tardy, please call the Child Safe line (508-841-8670) by 8:00am. You may also call the day or night before. An automated phone call goes out every morning at 9:15 and if we do not receive a message by 8:00am you will receive a phone call. This is a child safety procedure that is in place to ensure the well- being of all of our students.

DISMISSAL

If you are dismissing your child early, you must call the Main Office at 508-841-8670 (instead of emailing team teachers).

LATE BUS
We are now offering a FREE late bus services for all Sherwood students on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The buses will depart from Sherwood at 4:00pm.

• There are three bus routes with centralized stops coming from each campus. Please look at the middle schools map to decide which route and stop is best for your family.

• Times are approximate and the actual time your child gets off the bus may be different from the time posted in the schedule.

• Parents are responsible for making arrangements for their students to get home from the centralized bus stops.
• Families will need to sign up for the late bus via the middle schools Google form by noon on the day your child will take the bus.
