Jessica Bowen Ossa - Library Director at Nanuet Public Library
Q) What do you look for in a job seeker during an interview?
A)First and foremost, every position has minimum requirements that are established by civil service, so we have to ensure the candidate meets those requirements. Beyond that, we look for demonstrated ability to complete the tasks that will be assigned. For example, we’re currently looking for a part-time public information specialist. This is a job that requires strong graphic design skills, so we’d like to see examples of past graphic design work. Also, we look for collaboration, communication, and conflict resolution skills. How well do you work with others? How do you respond to issues when they arise? Are you a problem-solver?
Q) What are some of the key value propositions of your brand which employees need to reflect?
A)Even if an employee’s tasks are “back of the house” operations rather than dealing directly with the public, we want everyone on staff to embrace a public service mindset. We’re here to be a resource for the community. We want our whole team to have that patrons-first customer service attitude, “We are here for you. How can we help you?"
Q) What are some of the paths for a candidate to grow at Nanuet Public Library?
A)As I mentioned earlier, we are a civil service institution. We encourage people in the job market to familiarize themselves with the Rockland County Department of Personnel’s procedures, and to sign up for exam notifications at: https://mycivilservice.rocklandgov.com/emailnotification
Particularly if interested in full-time work, taking the exam for a job title of interest is a great way to become a candidate when a position opens up at a civil service library in the county. Right now, we are encouraging people to apply for the Library Clerk-Typist II exam for a full-time position that is currently vacant. The link to apply for open competitive exams is here: https://mycivilservice.rocklandgov.com/exams
