Text-a-Tip
As part of our ongoing commitment to the well-being and safety of our youth, we want to keep you informed about vital resources and campaigns focused on youth substance use prevention. It is crucial that we all work together to raise awareness and create supportive environments for our children and teens.
Maryville Junior High participates in Text-a-Tip, the easiest way to anonymously report a crime or concern for students. Students can text tips to 274637 using the keyword MJHTIP.
Resources for Youth Substance Use Prevention:
1. Be Aware Blount
o This local initiative works directly with schools, community members, and families to educate them on the risks of substance abuse and misuse. https://beawareblount.org/
2. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
o SAMHSA provides a wide range of prevention materials, resources for parents, and tools to help families talk to teens about substance use. Their website offers free toolkits and guides for effective communication. www.samhsa.gov
3. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for Teens
o NIDA provides science-based facts and information specifically for teens and their parents. Their website includes interactive tools, educational videos, and fact sheets about drugs and the brain, peer pressure, and healthy alternatives. o www.teens.drugabuse.gov
4. Above the Influence
o A national campaign aimed at empowering teens to make healthy decisions about substance use. The website features testimonials, videos, and social media tools to help teens resist pressure to use substances. o www.abovetheinfluence.com
Tips for Parents:
· Start Early: Begin conversations about substance use early and keep the lines of communication open. Your children need to know they can come to you without fear of judgment.
· Be Informed: Understand the risks associated with different substances. Knowledge is your best tool for prevention.
· Be a Positive Role Model: Your behavior influences your child’s choices. Show them how to make healthy, responsible decisions.
· Get Involved: Join community groups, attend local workshops, and stay connected with other parents. Prevention efforts are stronger when we work together.
MJHS Ready Graduate
Maryville City Schools believes that every student deserves to enter the next phase of life with the appropriate tools for that next step. MCS desires to prepare every student to be "Ready" for one of the three "E"s: Enrollment, Employment, or Enlistment. By taking this purposeful and intentional approach, MCS has designed a college and career program that fits the individual needs of every student. Every student will be "Maryville Ready". We invite you to read our latest edition, MJHS Ready Graduate Gazette.
Volunteer Opportunities for 9th Grade Students
Sam Houston Elementary is looking for high school volunteers to support the Summer Reading program. In our summer reading program, elementary students visit our library with their families, take AR tests to earn prizes, and come to listen to guest speakers and interactive activities. We will be meeting on the following Thursdays this summer: 5/29, 6/5, 6/12, 6/19 from 8:00-12:00.
There are 2 ways you can be a part of this opportunity:
- Volunteer as a Camp Assistant. You can sign up for one or multiple 2-hour shifts. Your assigned place could be greeting families at the check in, assisting students getting logged in to iPads and reading test questions to them, or reading to students in the library. Many of these families are visiting for the first time with their upcoming kindergarten students, so you must be ready to engage with them and be enthusiastic about supporting these families. Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0C4AAFA72BA7FB6-56466255-summer
- Volunteer as a Guest Teacher: Do you have a talent to share? Are you passionate about a subject? If so, what talent could you and a group of friends share? Elementary kiddos LOVE to hear about new things in their world! Art, a foreign language, playing instruments, robotics, cookie decorating, woodworking, dance/cheer/exercise/sports…honestly, these kiddos would love to hear big kids like you share about your talents and passions! If you and a small group would like to showcase your talents for an hour on one of our 4 sessions, please complete this link to tell me more about your plan and you will be contacted for more details: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=MZUbU75HG0aS8l-mEweKgoZret3vIfBHjqN7uBesDoRUMERIT1owWFRVMDZOVEsyMTc3N0VIQUE1WS4u
