A Message from Dr. Di Nicola
Good evening, JLS Mustang Families!
We hope that you had a wonderful finale to February 2024 this past week and are excited for the gorgeous spring that is about to settle upon us as we head into our last three months of the 2023-2024 school year!
Thank you to our entire school community for participating so enthusiastically in our Black History Month Spirit Week! It was awesome to see so many terrific representations of colleges, universities, impactful figures, music and sports, and flag colors throughout our hallways. Our Mustang Family will have a chance yet again to celebrate these next four weeks as March is Women's History Month! Our librarians have already prepared some unique showcases of the astounding contributions of so many women past, present, and future, so we are excited to see what will come in the next few weeks as a result!
We also wish the best of luck to our fine artists as they commence assessment season after their impressive Pre-Assessment Concert this past Tuesday, February 27. Our orchestra musicians take part in their assessment at Stone Hill MS on Wednesday, March 6 and Thursday, March 7. We will be sending positive vibes your way, Ms. Kanakry and our Mustang string musicians!
This coming week proves to be super exciting with a variety of unique events happening at JLS!:
Let's Welcome Author Sydney Dunlap on Monday, March 4!
We are welcoming author Sydney Dunlap (It Happened on Saturday) tomorrow (Monday, March 4) during grade-level assemblies throughout the day. You can find out more information about this outstanding connective opportunity for our Mustangs later in this week's issue.

The schedule for these events is posted below...and a special message will be delivered to our Rising 6th Grade families this weekend with the details. Frederick Douglass ES will complete their visit next Friday, March 15. 😀

Scheduling for SY 2024-2025: A Permission Click is On the Way to Confirm Your Mustang's Courses!
Please be on the look-out for a Permission Click from your child's counselor to confirm your Mustang's course selections for SY 2024-2025 in the coming week or so, a very important action step for you and your family as we begin to build our master schedule of classes for our new school year to come. We start very early to make sure we have the best possible conditions in place with a focus on each and every one of our students as a prominent goal!
Important Calendar Dates for Spring 2024 Coming!
Next weekend please look out for updates to our calendar of events to wrap up SY 2023-2024, covering March - June 2024 and including information about our forthcoming grade-level field trips, 3rd Quarter Honor Roll assembly, and much more!
Finally, please remember that Tuesday, March 5 is a Professional Learning Day for staff, so our students will not be in attendance as they will have a holiday. 😀
As I am finishing up this message early this morning for you, I'm going to head out now and do a run in the sun to soak up some of this beautiful weather this first Sunday in March...and I hope that you have had an enjoyable weekend with your family and friends.
Wishing you the best of weeks ahead...and hope to see you very soon! Seventeen days until spring is officially here!

The Leesburg Police Department is issuing a traffic advisory alerting the public to expect traffic delays and road/lane closures this coming Monday, March 4 for the Celebration of Life for Firefighter Trevor Brown at Cornerstone Chapel (6 AM - 3 PM). Due to the solemn nature of this event and to ensure the safety and respect of all involved, motorists are urged to plan ahead and use alternate routes.

Donations for Fire Fighters Injured in Sterling Home Explosion
If you are interested in donating to help the families of fallen fire fighters from last weekend's Sterling home explosion, you may do so through the Loudoun First Responder Foundation. The Loudoun First Responders Foundation serves Loudoun County by providing immediate financial support to active first responder personnel in their time of need.
One of the most seriously injured fire fighters remains hospitalized and has a long recovery ahead of him. He is a full-time 8th grade teacher at J. Michael Lunsford Middle School in South Riding along with his wife who is also a full-time teacher. They have four young children. Their twin boys who are currently sophmores in high school were Simpson Middle School students.
No Place For Hate at JLS
No Place for Hate Initiative @Simpson Middle School
Simpson Middle School is joining the No Place for Hate initiative!
Created by the Anti-Defamation League, this program provides lessons, activities, and resources which we will uniquely tailor to meet the needs of our school community. Our goal is to facilitate an environment that helps students to be Honorable, Engaged, Respectful, and Determined each and every day. To meet this goal, our objectives include: implementing strategies that promote school unity, encouraging student voice, celebrating diversity, increasing student-leadership opportunities, and encouraging respect for each member of our school community. Students will participate in learning activities via weekly advisory lessons and quarterly events.
The No Place for Hate Initiative uses its pledge as a focus for students and teachers. The program encourages students to make a commitment to uphold each line. Please see below:
Middle/High School Pledge
• I will seek to gain understanding of those who are different from me.
• I will speak out against prejudice and discrimination.
• I will reach out to support those who are targets of hate.
• I will promote respect for people and help foster a prejudice-free school.
• I believe that one person can make a difference—no person can be an “innocent” bystander when it comes to opposing hate.
• I recognize that respecting individual dignity and promoting intergroup harmony are the
responsibilities of all students.
Escuela Secundaria y Preparatoria
Please be on the lookout for further information about our efforts with No Place For Hate at Simpson! We look forward to your support, as always, as our Mustang Community!

SHINE! Spotlighting Heroes in Education Recognition Program
HRTD is excited to launch SHINE! Spotlighting Heroes in Education, a new recognition program that aims to tell the stories of the incredible work happening throughout the division. We encourage schools to promote SHINE both inside their buildings between peers as well as with their school communities through newsletters, websites and social media as all parents, students, staff and community members are welcome to submit a nomination. Each month, Loudoun Education Foundation will choose one submission to provide additional acknowledgement and a special gift.
How it works:
We are seeking submissions for LCPS staff members at schools, central office and support locations who:
Have gone above and beyond in a situation
Have inspired others or have a heartwarming story
Are doing something unique or creative that is leading to results
In general, ANY great news!
Complete the submission form (It’s short and easy!)
The Employee Recognition office notifies the nominee as well as their supervisor of the submission
The story may be placed on the Employee Recognition webpage.
We are honored to announce that Ms. Victoria Curtis-Meyding, Mr. Derrick Jackson, and Ms. Alesha Whitmore have already been recognized by families in our community! You can find their stories on the SHINE webpage under Inspirational Stories.
Our goal is to place a spotlight on the hundreds of positive interactions taking place in LCPS each day...and especially at JLS! We look forward to seeing your celebrations of our JLS Mustang Professionals throughout 2023-2024!

"If I Were Mayor" - Essay Contest for 7th and 8th Graders
The Town of Leesburg invites local 7th and 8th grade students to enter the Virginia Municipal League’s (VML) “If I Were Mayor” essay contest.
Students are asked to identify a problem within their community, gather feedback from community members, and offer a proposed solution, which must be presented in a typed essay between 300 and 500 words.
Students must live in the Town of Leesburg, which is considered a VML member locality. All entries must be received by end of day on Monday, March 18. Visit https://www.vml.org/Opportunities/Essay-Contest for full details.
Regional winners selected from around the state will each receive a $150 gift card and a plaque. One statewide winner chosen from the regional winners will receive a $250 gift card and a plaque. The runner-up from the region that receives the statewide award will become that region’s winner.
“This is a great opportunity for our local 7th and 8th grade students to imagine themselves as mayor, identify an issue, and problem solve for their community,” said Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk. “I can't wait to read the great ideas that will come from the essays. If there is a really good idea maybe we can work together.”
Winning essays will be featured in the May issue of VML’s magazine Virginia Town & City.
