Sunset View Newsletter
Week of September 16th
Message from Jennifer
Our students are settling into their routines with engaging activities like gardening, VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts), music, Mindfulness, Leader In Me, and so much more. Be sure to ask your children about their experiences!
Thank you to all that were able to join us for our Family Kick-Off Dinner, and to the team of volunteers behind the scenes that made it happen! It was so fun seeing our field filled with families in lawn chairs. There were so many great things happening from yummy food trucks, to brand new logowear to purchase, crafts, raffles, and so much more. Our fourth graders raised money for their activities by selling delicious root beer floats (they made one especially for me) using home brewed root beer crafted by a Sunset View parent. This event is always such a great way to kick-off and celebrate the start to a successful school year, and we just love it. I hope all who attended had a fabulous time!
THIS WEEK IS: B WEEK

Leader in Me
Habit 1: Be Proactive
Part of Be Proactive is being able to stop and think before we act. With your child, do some role-playing to practice the skill of stopping and thinking in different situations. Your goal in these role plays is to encourage your child to stop and think before reacting. Use the following ideas to get started, and then think of some that can be immediately applicable to your child’s life.
1. (In this role play, you should play the part of your child’s friend.) Say that you have a new best friend who lives close to your house and you don’t want to play with him or her anymore. Apologize and then wait for your child’s reaction.
2. (In this role play, you should be your child’s sibling.) Tell your child that you broke his or her favorite toy by accident. Tell him or her that you don’t think it’s a very big deal because he or she has many toys.
3. (In this role play, you should play the part of your child and your child should play the part of you). Tell your child that you are “sooooo bored” and there is nothing fun to do. Complain that no one wants to play and that he or she (as the parent) needs to amuse you

Friendly Reminders
Please bring in a Picture for Our Community Bulletin Board!
Please bring in a picture of your family to add to our community bulletin board! Pictures can be sent to your child's classroom teacher and we will take care of the rest.
Attendance
Please do not send your child to school when they are sick.
When your child must be absent for any reason, please call the office at 858-988-2000 by 9:30 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. You can also email sunselm@sandi.net.
Any child arriving after 9:00 a.m. must stop in the office and pick up a tardy slip. Let's set good habits early in the school year to arrive on time.
Parking
We have very limited parking around Sunset View Elementary. The front of the school is now a 3 minute loading zone. Please be kind to our neighbors by keeping their driveways open and free. The staff parking lot is only for staff and we kindly request that you do not enter the lot. We also strongly encourage you to model good habits for your children by using the crosswalks. Running across Hill St. in front of the school and/or having children exit cars in the middle of the street is dangerous. Please pass this important message along to anyone who may be picking up your children (grandparents, child care provider, etc.). Your child's safety is always top priority and never an inconvenience. We appreciate your help.
