The First Days of School are filled with building routines with our students. Did you know that teachers create routines for how to line up, how to ask for help, what voice level to use in different locations, how to walk to walk to line, where to play at recess, how to put a book away, what do with an activity that is finished, and on and on and on. Most families learned the value of these routines last year when we were Full Distance. Not only does routine-building create stability and a sense of calm, but it also decreases anxiety. We welcome that you build morning and after school routines as well.
One routine that we are all still revising is our dismissal routine. We are aware that in our very urban setting, it's been hectic at dismissal time. Please be patient with us, as we go back to the drawing board and re-think a smoother process. Details coming...
In this week's newsletter, you may see that I'm building a routine as well. I'm inviting you each to choose the translation that works for your family. A new feature, thanks to our district purchasing an upgrading version of the Smore Newsletter app, is the Accessibility feature up in the right hand corner. I hope my newsletters reach EVERYONE now!
A few reminders...
- Water bottles, water bottles, water bottles. Please send your child with a water bottle each day. They cannot access the water faucet, but they can fill their water bottle.
- Dress for the weather. Now that we eat outside, there will be days when we cannot "Climate control" the surroundings. Extra layers, fewer layers, sunscreens, hats, etc are recommended.
- PLEASE learn how to use the parent portal to ensure that you have working email. This will the key way that I'll be communicating with all families.
- The office is open and the phones are ringing. Please be patient with Ms. Erika and Ms. Rosy. Our phone never stops ringing. We promise that we are not ignoring your phone calls. There are just a lot of them!
Have a great week!

The First Day of School
INTRODUCING: Counselor, Ms. Diana Ulloa-Serrano
Dear La Ballona Elementary School Community,
My name is Diana Ulloa-Serrano, and I am excited to introduce myself as the new full-time School Counselor at La Ballona Elementary School. I am honored to have the opportunity to work and collaborate with students, parents, teachers, administrators, staff and community members at La Ballona Elementary School.
My passion for school counseling, child development, and student success has emerged from my years of experience in education (PreK-12). I have experience working with diverse children, adolescents, young adults, and families from different cultures, ethnicities, socioeconomic status, and abilities. I have been in the field of education since 2008. My many roles in education included tutor, preschool teacher, school age teacher at a homeless shelter, health and wellness counselor, intervention counselor, and TK-12 professional school counselor. As a school counselor I have been actively involved in multiple school committees including leadership, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Multi-Tiered, Multi-Domain Systems of Support (MTMDSS/MTSS), Student Support Team (SST), and Building Assets and Reducing Risks (BARR). In my previous position as an intervention high school counselor in Compton, I created and implemented a comprehensive school counseling program aligned to the American School Counselor Association National Model (ASCA), the California Association of School Counselors, PBIS, MTSS, and restorative practices.
My goal as school counselor at La Ballona Elementary School is to create and implement a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses all students needs. A program aligned to ASCA, CASC, MTMDSS/MTSS, PBIS, restorative practices, and best practices. A program that cultivates a safe, supporting, and nurturing learning environment where students feel welcomed, valued, respected, empowered, and have a sense of belonging; an environment where students are allowed to reach their fullest potential. My personal philosophy is that all students are capable of success; with the appropriate resources and support, all students are capable of defining and creating their own success. I want to serve as an advocate for all students. I will create and promote educational equity and provide support in all domains to all students in order to ensure their academic success. In addition, I will create and maintain partnerships with other educators, parents, guardians and the community, to build a support system that promotes and enhances student success. I will promote social justice and will empower students to overcome their unique challenges through leadership and advocacy.
I look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you soon! If you have any questions for me, please feel free to send me an email at dianaserrano@ccusd.org
Warmly,
Diana Ulloa-Serrano
School Counselor

Calurosamente,
Diana Ulloa-Serrano

Backpacks for Kids Feeds Families in Need
Culver City Unified School District (CCUSD) believes that no child in our community should go hungry or have food insecurities, especially on weekends when students don’t have access to school-sponsored breakfast and lunch. The Culver City Council PTA, in conjunction with CCUSD, provides students in need with a backpack filled with non-perishable food and snacks each week to ensure that every child can eat on the weekends.
There is no cost to participate and enrollment is 100% confidential. Each week, filled backpacks will be available in the school’s main office. You or your child, simply pick up the backpack and take it home. Backpacks will not be returned each week; your student will receive a new backpack each week. Enrollment is ongoing so any child in need can sign up for the program at any time throughout the school year.
If you would like your student to receive a weekly backpack, sign up here or complete a form in your school office.
