Sharing stories is powerful way to build empathy. To show empathy means the ability to identify with another person’s feelings or experiences. Students will be given an opportunity to read selected books building reading comprehension, character analysis, and understanding character traits.
These days, texting seems to be the preferred method of communication for our students! With the Table Texting strategy, teachers can tap into this communication style as students discuss their learning. This activity allows students to practice valuable skills that are applicable during both face-to-face and digital discussions, such as using evidence to support claims, asking questions to further understanding, and respectfully sharing a differing opinion.
Research shows that integrating mindfulness practices into the classroom benefits students by reducing stress and anxiety, improving concentration, increasing engagement, and supporting the development of social skills, problem-solving skills, and decision-making skills. Just a few minutes a day is all it takes to experience these benefits! Many technology tools exist to help teachers and students focus on mindfulness in the classroom. An iTeach favorite is the Stop, Breathe & Think app, which include interactive activities that guide users to:
Stop - Check in with what they are thinking and how they are feeling
Breathe - Practice mindful breathing to manage their thoughts and emotions
Think - Broaden their perspective
Best of all, Stop, Breathe & Think offers all educators downloadable classroom toolkits featuring mindfulness resources and a free lifetime premium membership to both the kids and the all ages apps, which provides access to over 100 premium activities.
This tool is ideal to utilize:
During Morning Meeting
During transition times
Before and after times of high-stress, such as assessments
When students need to refocus
Within a designated area of the classroom where individual students can visit when they need a moment to reflect or regroup
