Vivian Banks Charter School Update - June 9, 2023
Principal's Message
As we wrap up another outstanding year at Vivian Banks I would like to take a minute and thank our wonderful Learning Community. I can’t overstate enough how much we appreciate and value our outstanding teachers, staff, parents and of course students. We would also like to share our gratitude with the Pala Band of Mission Indians for their continued commitment to our schools and their unwavering support of our students who reside on the reservation. VBCS is a success because of the coming together of so many passionate people around a simple yet shared goal. The goal of providing every student in our care a supportive and nurturing quality education. Have a wonderful summer!
Culture and Community
VBCS Promotions
VBCS celebrated Kindergarten Promotion on June 8th. On June 9th we welcomed many of our families on campus to celebrate the promotion of our 5th grade students. It was a joyful celebration where families and students were recognized for reaching this important milestone. Thank you to Kindergarten teacher Kelly Lyons and our 5th Grade teacher Amy Tull for organizing such memorial events.
Summer Intervention and Extended Learning Program!
Our Summer Intervention will run from June 13 –June 30. Students will attend Summer Intervention from 8:00am – 12:00pm and will also be able to participate in the Extended Learning Program from 12:00-5:00pm Monday - Friday. Breakfast, Lunch, and a snack will be provided.
We strongly urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to enrich your student’s education. Early intervention in reading will greatly increase your student’s likelihood of academic success in future years.
Space is limited for summer intervention, so we ask that please inform us ASAP if you would like your child to attend. Before agreeing to attend please insure that your student will be able to attend each day at the time listed above.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call the office at (760) 742-3300.
Vivian Banks Charter School will be offering free breakfast and lunch Monday-Friday, from June 13-June 30. No meals will be offered on Monday, June 19, when the school is closed for the holiday. All children ages 18 and under are invited and no registration is required. Breakfast will be served in the cafeteria from 8:30-9:15 and lunch will be served from 12:15-1:00.
Counselor's Corner
Here are a few tips to help keep your child on track so your summer can be fun, rewarding, and enjoyable for the whole family.
1. Maintain your Schedule
Even if bedtimes and morning routines adjust slightly, it will only serve you to create a predictable schedule each day that will allow for plenty of sleep and the comfort of predictability. Mimic routines as much as possible when traveling as well.
2. Make Plans & Make It Visual (the earlier the better)
Kids who thrive on predictability and routine have a really hard time with transitions (moving from one activity to another) and knowing beforehand what is coming next is crucial. Use a large dry erase calendar or picture board with posted times so kids know what will be happening that day or that week (art camp drop off and pick up, play dates, visit to Grandma’s, beach vacation, etc.).
3. Get Outdoors
Summer is the ideal time to get away from screens and spend some time in nature. Summer camps, walking the trails, swimming in a natural pool, or simple family picnics can create a new, calm sensory experience that opens the door to connecting our kids to their bodies and the natural rhythms of the earth around us.
4. Create (or maintain) a Behavioral System
Clear behavior expectations, boundaries, and rewards and benefits of good behavior are even more essential during the seemingly boundlessness of summer. Kids may like to act like they are in charge, but security and feeling safe comes from knowing what is expected of them and the choices they have in front of them, including the consequences of those choices. Make it simple -choose two or three of the most desired positive behaviors you want to focus on and consistently nurture those with positive reinforcement all summer.
Following these strategies can create a fun, nurturing, and enjoyable summer for everyone as well as providing the tools that will make transitioning back into school easier in the Fall. Now grab a towel, pack some snacks, and head to the lake!

Health and Saftey
Free Covid-19 Tests
In an effort to support the health and safety of our learning communities, the State of California has provided no-cost, at-home Covid-19 antigen test kits for families with students enrolled in Bonsall Unified School District. These tests are meant to assist you with quickly determining if your student may have COVID-19.
These at-home test kits can offer a safe, quick, and convenient way for students to monitor their health and help to reduce transmission. Test kits are available and can be ascertained at your student(s) school office.
We strongly encourage families to use the kits to test their children and report positive results to their school site. The results are important because they will allow us to proactively keep our students safe and our schools open for teaching and learning.
Thank you for your continued support and helping us keep our school communities healthy and safe.
