Sunrise Family Updates
10.11.24
Hi Sunrise Families!
Happy Friday! I hope this message finds you well! These past couple days I have had the opportunity to learn with elementary principals around the state at our annual conference. The first recommendation our key note speaker, Doug Reeves made was to read this book, The Anxious Generation. The book cites research that children should wait until age 14 to have a smart phone and then wait to add social media at age 16. More info can also be found at https://www.waituntil8th.org/. If 10 families from a grade level sign the Wait Until 8th Pledge, then we will reach a critical mass to make our pledge active. Let's do this, Sunrise!
You should have all received an invite via Bloomz to sign up for Family Teacher Conferences. Thank you for booking a time slot that works for you and reaching out to your child's teacher if you did not receive that notification.
Finally, we have a completed playground now and we could not be more excited! We hope students will enjoy this amazing space at recess and outside of school hours. It is a school and community playground. All are welcome! Today and Monday students are learning how to safely play on it. Perhaps you can test it out this weekend and for sure on Wednesday, October 16 for our PTO event!
Our official Grand Opening Ceremony will be Friday, October 18 at 10:15 am. You are all invited to attend this great celebration of many years of hard work and dedication.
Please enjoy the updates below and photos from our first Sunrise Clubs of the school year last Friday. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Katie Smullen
Sunrise Principal
Socktober!
During the month of October, 4th graders are asking ALL Sunrise students to help with our community service project: SOCKTOBER! Our goal is to collect 1,000 pairs of *new* socks to be donated to Feed and Clothe My People. Socks are one of the most requested items for donation, and with winter coming up, everyone needs warm, cozy, and comfortable feet!
There will be one box for each grade level near the cafeteria. You can donate a single pair of new socks, or a package of socks will count for the number of pairs in that package. The grade level that collects the most pairs will receive a popcorn and juice party! The competition starts Tuesday, October 1st and goes until Thursday, October 31st.
Thank you for helping with our project!
Battle of the Books
A reminder that the Battle of the Books list is out! Any students in grades 4 and 5 are welcome to compete in this year's battle. Even if you choose not to compete, they always have a great selection of books: Elementary Battle List.
