Helping Kids Deal With Conflict
No matter how hard we try to avoid them, arguments, fights, and disagreements are a fact of life — for adults and for kids. Conflict may not be pleasant, but it doesn’t have to feel catastrophic. Teaching kids practical skills to manage it in a healthy way will help them navigate everything from squabbles over toys to relationships with siblings both now and as they grow up.
This week at childmind.org, we’re talking about how to help kids deal with conflict and the intense emotions that come with it. We have tips for calming kids down so you can help them decide what to do next. And because conflict often erupts from painful feelings, we have resources on helping kids deal with disappointment and embarrassment. When it comes to finding a resolution, kids should be aware of their own wants and needs, but recognize that other people have wants and needs, too — so we have advice for helping kids understand how to empathize and set boundaries.
