Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday (No School) in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. Born in 1929, King's actual birthday is January 15. Today, the King holiday serves multiple purposes: It honors the total legacy of King; focuses on the issue of civil rights; highlights the use of nonviolence to promote change; and calls people into public service.
Meet the Staff - This month we interview our 1st Grade Team
Mrs. Canseco, Mrs. Carmona, Mrs. Zafran, and Ms. Mason
โ๏ธ๐ Our 1st Grade team from Left to Right. ๐ โ๏ธ
My name is Georgina Canseco. I was born in Mexico and came to the United States when I was 16. I obtained my bachelor's degree and teaching credentials from CSUN, and I have been working at Dearborn for 8 years. This is my first-year teaching 1st grade, and I taught Special Ed for 7 years. I am 1 of 7 siblings and I have 26 nieces and nephews. I have 3 daughters, 1 son, and 3 dogs. I enjoy gardening, knitting, and coloring with watercolors.
Mrs. Carmona: In my 22-year journey as an educator, I've been fortunate to nurture young minds, an endeavor that's brought immeasurable joy and learning. I was born in Cuba and am bilingual. My academic path led me through Pepperdine University for a Master's in Education and CSUN for a Bachelor's degree, grounding me in the art of teaching. Alongside this, as a family of USC alums we enjoy watching the Trojans play during the football season. Personally, I am married and consider myself incredibly fortunate to have 3 amazing daughters. The anticipation of welcoming our 2nd granddaughter into our family fills my heart with joyโa sentiment shared not only by our family but also by our two beloved dogs, Zero and Reggie. Beyond these familial bonds, my passions and interests include exploring new cultures and languages through travel, savoring flavors as a foodie, playing the piano, weight training, musicals, concerts, and plays. Above all, what I truly love most is the simple joy of spending time with family and friends.
My name is Mrs. Zafran. This is my 13th year teaching and my 8th year at Dearborn. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and am a former LAUSD student. I received my B.S. in Human Development at UC Davis, my teaching credential and my M.A. in Educational Administration at CSUN. I have been married for 1 1/2 years and we have a 3 year old pitbull/ lab mix. In my free time I like to spend time with family and friends, hike, do yoga and pilates, go to museums, see plays/ musicals and go to concerts. One fun fact about me is that I love to travel. I have traveled to 5 out of 7 continents and I lived in China for awhile teaching English.
My name is Ms. Mason, and I am one of Dearbornโs first grade teachers. This is my first year as a teacher last year I started at Dearborn as a long-term substitute. I am extremely grateful to have found my home here at Dearborn. I went to the University of California, Riverside for my undergraduate degree in Liberal Studies. After college I decided to go back to my old elementary school, Vintage Magnet to be a teacherโs assistant. During the pandemic I decided it was my time to start working towards my credential and I enrolled in CSUNโs ACT program and completed that in 2021. I am a valley girl born and raised! I am the oldest of three, I have a sister and a brother. Whenever I am not teaching you can find me at the gym, cooking/baking, going to concerts, sports games, or just hanging out with family and friends. I recently got bit by the travel bug, my friends and I are planning a couple new adventures to St. Lucia, Thailand, and Greece.
