CEC/ATC Family Newsletter
January 2025
From the Principal
Greetings to all parents, families, and guardians! One of the goals I set for myself this year was to increase our outreach to you all. I am very proud of our school and I want to be able to share all of the wonderful things your children are doing in their classrooms. We have a wonderful team of classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and ancillary staff that work tirelessly to provide a high quality educational experience for all of our students. A new issue will be released at the end of each month and we will also continue to make social media posts highlighting engaging activities from the classrooms.
I always look forward to hearing from our families! If you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns, I can be reached via phone (989) 275-9583 or email moorej@coorisd.net.

Ms. Cheri (Intermediate MoCI)
Ms. Cheri's class is working on learning the states of matter. They are solid, liquid, and gas. We had fun incorporating the scientific process with hands-on activities. We made Oobleck and tried to determine if it was a solid or liquid based on its properties. We also created a gas by making a chemical reaction, mixing baking soda and vinegar in a baggie. The baggies gathered gas bubbles and popped. It was called "A snowman toot." The kids really enjoyed getting their hand in the projects and had fun learning in the process. We are making slime next!
Ms. Pat (Elementary MoCI)
Ms. Hannah (Secondary SCI/SXI)
Students in Ms. Hannah's room had a fun time this month working on their cooking skills! Cooking not only produces something delicious, but it helps students work on skills such as task completion, fine motor skills, following directions, engages the senses, and gives them a big sense of accomplishment. Ms. Hannah and her team work hard to ensure that each student is able to participate to the fullest extent possible. One of the favorite recipes this month was making personal pizzas!
Ms. Tracy (Intermediate SCI/SXI)
Ms. Emily (Primary MoCI)
The month of January has been all about the alphabet in Ms. Emily's room. They have been working on their Alphabet Animal Book and have included creatures such as an axolotl, bat, chameleon, dragonfly, elephant, ferret, and great white shark! Once completed, this book will have all sorts of animals and critters from A to Z! The students have also been focusing on the letters W, K, and U in their lessons. The art focus this month has been on the animals already chosen for their book. The students have also been learning about all sorts of shapes!
Ms. Shannon (Secondary MoCI)
Over this last month, Ms. Shannon and her team have been working on incorporating the use of sign language with their students. Learning sign language can help make an individual more aware of the challenges the deaf community faces, helps to break down barriers to communication, and makes one aware of a completely different culture. You can read more about the importance of learning sign language in this blog from Hand Talk.
Ms. Angie (ATC Work-Based Learning Program)
Students in Ms. Angie's classroom are exposed to all sorts of programming and opportunities. One of the biggest aspects of the program is the work-based learning component. We have been able to form partnerships with various businesses throughout the community that have allowed us to bring our students to learn various job skills. Some of these businesses include Randy's Family Restaurant, Fred's Restaurant, Family Fare of Roscommon, Roscommon County Animal Shelter, and many more. Throughout the year, the students are put on six-week rotations and cycle through each location. This is an invaluable experience for our students.
Another focus of the program is daily living skills. Those include cleaning, laundry, cooking, personal hygiene/grooming, etc. Recently, Ms. Angie's students were able to follow a scratch recipe for Cold Oven Apple Cake. The students all had a wonderful time and the cake was delicious!
