Dental Exams Right at School for Your Child
Dental health is an important part of a child’s overall health – we love to see our students’ healthy smiles!
This spring, District 34 is bringing Orland Park Dental Services (OPDS) to our schools to provide dental exams to any of our students who need them. As a reminder, the State of Illinois requires students in grades K, 2, and 6 to submit proof of a dental exam – but these in-school appointments with OPDS are open to any and all students! They provide dental services to children on public aid as well as those with private dental insurance.
The exams are provided by caring, licensed dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants with state-of-the-art portable dental equipment. OPDS has been providing in-school dental services since 1999 and their healthcare professionals ensure a clean, safe, and comfortable environment within the schools.
Parents and guardians who complete the consent form do not have to join their child at the appointment (but you are welcome to come in). If you have questions or need assistance, contact District Nurse Shari Stadler.
Mental Health Matters: January 29 Event
Emotions Matter: Applying Principles of Restorative Practices in Parenting (Virtual Event)
Presented by Sarah Gebhardt, PhD, NCSP, District 34 Instructional Coach for Student Services
Join us for a dynamic virtual event where we revisit and further explore the crucial topic of why emotions matter in the lives of children—at home, in school, and beyond. In this interactive session, Dr. Gebhardt will share practical strategies and insights on how understanding and managing emotions can positively influence your child’s engagement, academic performance, and overall well-being.
What You’ll Learn
- The Impact of Emotions: Discover how understanding and managing emotions can boost your child’s success, both academically and socially.
- District Support: Gain a clearer picture of how D34 actively supports emotional learning and regulation in our classrooms.
- Empowerment: Learn how to apply restorative practices at home to nurture your child’s emotional growth, foster connection, and build resiliency.

Updates from our Instructional Innovation Specialists
In District 34, we focus our innovation and inquiry work around our dispositions. Dispositions are a mindset for learning and a focus for our work with students.
DISPOSITIONS ARE
frequent and voluntary habits of thinking and doing
overarching sets of behaviors
acquired patterns of behavior
intentional and oriented to broad goals
perception and inclination to make good use of that ability in appropriate situations
desire to use knowledge and skills
Within the work of our new strategic plan, we also took a look at our dispositions and made changes to our current teaching and learning practices.
Here is the newest set of dispositions:
When staff are working with students, we are actively teaching students about the dispositions and how to exemplify these characteristics of learners. Over the coming months, we will be highlighting different dispositions and how students experience them in their learning.
Reminder - Weather-Related Closings
❄️ Snow Days ❄️
This year, we will continue with the use of traditional "snow days." If we experience inclement weather that would make it unsafe (or impossible) for staff and students to get to school, or other emergency situation, schools will be closed, no iPads required. Though the Board approved an e-Learning plan for the District in 2023, that plan is an insurance policy, with remote learning days to be used only in extreme situations.
For many students, school is the safest place to be, even in bad weather, so the decision to close schools comes after a great deal of review, thought, and collaboration with our Buildings and Grounds department, the Village, our transportation providers, and other local school district officials (as outlined in our full guidelines).
The District will post on our website and social media channels, and send an email, phone call, and text message when there are closures or other weather-related impacts to school operations. To ensure that you receive notification, log into PowerSchool to check that your phone numbers and emails are correct.
Don't Forget to OPT-IN for Text Messages
During severe winter weather, we will send school closure notifications via email, phone call, and text message. If you like to get notifications via text messages, regulations require that you take an active step to opt in to receive text notifications through BrightArrow.
So, if you haven't already done so, please text "YES" to 79041 so that you don't miss any important weather-related updates this winter.

January Update from GNCY
Healthy New Year's Resolutions for Children & Teens
The start of a new year is a great time to help your children focus on forming good habits. Making New Year's resolutions can be a fun way to do this!
New Year's resolution ideas for kids 5 to 12 years old
- I will try to talk with my parent or a trusted adult when I have a problem or feel stressed.
- I'll try to be friendly to kids who may have a hard time making friends by talking with them and inviting them to join activities.
New Year's resolution ideas for teens (13 years old & older)
- I will resist peer pressure to try drugs, alcohol, smoking, or vaping.
- When faced with a difficult decision, I will talk about my choices with an adult I can trust.
Check Out Peachjar!
District 34's digital backpack is through a flyer communication tool called Peachjar. You should have received a welcome email from Peachjar that includes a username and password. This is provided to give you the opportunity to manage your account and flyer delivery preferences, but you do not need to log in to receive or view school digital flyers. When you receive your first eflyer, be sure to click “always display images.”
This system is used exclusively for distribution of school-approved flyers. Your email address will not be shared or used for any other purpose. You also will be able to visit your school’s website to see school-approved digital flyers by clicking the Peachjar button on each school’s website.
Note: Peachjar is free to our schools because community partners pay a small service fee to post and distribute digital flyers (typically much less than the cost to copy and deliver paper flyers).

Glenview School District 34 is a diverse, inclusive school district that serves approximately 4,400 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade across three primary schools (Henking, Lyon and Westbrook), three intermediate schools (Glen Grove, Hoffman and Pleasant Ridge), and two middle schools (Attea and Springman). The primary and intermediate schools are organized in three clusters: Henking-Hoffman; Lyon-Pleasant Ridge; and Westbrook-Glen Grove. The D34 Pre School serves a blend of students with special needs and typically developing peers and is housed within Westbrook School. D34 enjoys support from parents and community members. Four Parent Teacher Organizations (one from each cluster, and one for the middle schools) provide volunteers, programs, and financial support to the schools they serve. The Glenview Education Foundation provides generous District-wide financial support for innovative initiatives that reach all students and the Debra Gelfand Children's Foundation supports students and families in need.
