Tennessee 4-H Volunteers / June 2024
Ruth Henderson McQueen Selected as a National 4-H Hall of Fame Inductee
We proudly announce that Ms. Ruth Henderson McQueen has been selected as a National 4-H Hall of Fame Inductee. The ceremony will occur in Boise, Idaho, on Monday, October 14. Everyone who knows Ms. Ruth loves her! She is passionate about 4-H Youth Development and loves sharing her knowledge with others. She is humbled to receive this award; we are so proud of her!
In 2017, the University of Tennessee looked at its 370,000 Alumni and selected 100 of the most accomplished graduates to be Distinguished Alumni. Ruth Henderson McQueen was one of those honored. In the opening sentence of her biography, Ruth said, “I am a product of the land-grant university system.”Her journey started in Philadelphia, TN, as a 5th-grade 4-H member. For a little girl growing up on a family farm with no indoor plumbing, television, or telephone, the world opened when Ruth joined 4-H! The opportunities led to experiences in citizenship, leadership, parliamentary procedure, public speaking, and project work. These opportunities motivated Ruth to pursue a college degree, an advanced degree, and a 26-year career in UT Extension. After retiring early in 2001, she continued using her skills and resources to serve the University of Tennessee, UT Extension, her community, agriculture, and especially 4-H.
Ms. Ruth began her career as an Extension Agent in Sequatchie County, Tennessee, doing adult and youth home economics programming. In 1977, she became the Associate Professor for 4-H Youth Development, primarily focusing on Adult Volunteer Leadership, Staff Development and Training, and International programs.
Celebrate the Flag this June
Flag Day is a celebration of the American flag that occurs each year on the anniversary of the flag’s official adoption, June 14. The stars and stripes originated as a result of a resolution adopted by the Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress at Philadelphia on June 14, 1777. Here are some interesting facts about the Flag (from "Our Flag" document by the Joint Committee on Printing, U.S. Congress) :
- The first flags adopted by our colonial forebears were symbolic of their struggles with the wilderness of the new land. Beavers, pine trees, rattlesnakes, anchors and various other insignia were affixed to different banners with mottoes such as “Hope,” “Liberty,” “Appeal to Heaven,” or “Don’t Tread on Me.”
-
The flag of the United States of America has 13 horizontal stripes—7 red and 6 white—the red and white stripes alternating, and a union which consists of white stars of 5 points on a blue field placed in the upper quarter next to the staff and extending to the lower edge of the fourth red stripe from the top. The number of stars equals the number of States in the Union. The proportions of the flag was prescribed by Executive Order of President Eisenhower on August 21, 1959.
-
Presentation of the flag during a ceremony should be preceded by a brief talk emphasizing the importance of the occasion. Following the presentation all present should salute the flag,
recite the pledge of allegiance, and sing the national anthem.
A useful flag ceremony for 4-H Camp is a "Flag Retiring Ceremony" by retired Knox County Extension Agent, Danny Bullington.
June 14 is also the birthday of the United States Army, which began in 1775. Here is a video of folding the Flag, compliments of the U.S. Army.
...and to make sure we don't leave out the U.S. Navy, make sure to check out the latest IMAX movie!
Conference Happening October 3-6, 2024
Registration will soon be open for the National 4-H Volunteer Conference at Rock Eagle, GA, scheduled for October 3-6, 2024! Take some time to explore the website (see http://www.4hvcoss.com/). We will notify everyone when it is officially open.
Thanks to two of our very own Tennessee 4-H volunteers, Matthew Hibdon and Dee Wolters, who serve in a leadership capacity on the Conference Planning Committee.
Participants will learn about the newest 4-H curricula, examine new 4-H ideas through exhibits and workshops, and have some wonderful networking opportunities with volunteers from all over the nation. In addition, some of the traditional fun favorites will be enjoyed by all - like the Rock Eagle BINGO, and toasted marshmallows by the campfire.
Have a conversation with your County 4-H Office about your participation. Scholarships will be available!
Volunteers are being selected at this time for Tennessee 4-H Roundup. Contact your County Extension Office for more information.
If you are selected to be a Volunteer for Roundup, you will be receiving information regarding your assignments. You can also visit the Roundup website for more information.
We are excited to announce the third annual 4-H Picnic at the Fair. The event will be held on Friday, August 16 at the State Fairgrounds in Lebanon (James E. Ward Agricultural Center, 945 E. Baddour Parkway, Lebanon, TN) and will begin at 3:00 pm central. There will be good food, great entertainment, and even better people gathering to celebrate Tennessee 4-H.
All funds raised will be used to provide 4-H camp and educational conference scholarships. Through your generosity at the 2022 and 2023 Picnic at the Fair, we were able to offer a 4-H Camp Scholarship to all 95 Tennessee counties.
Visit this website for registration and sponsorship opportunities.
4-H Animal Science events are upcoming in the near future. Volunteers are an important part of making sure that the 4-H Animal Science program is "making the best better." Volunteers are encouraged to communicate often with their local County Extension Office to make sure that 4-H members are ready for these wonderful experiences.
The Tennessee 4-H Animal Science program provides real-life educational opportunities that allow youth to develop animal skills and learn about animal-related careers. More importantly, they learn what it means to be responsible for something other than themselves. This is one part of a larger youth development program that aims to develop young people who will have a positive impact in their communities and the world.
The Tennessee Sheep Producers Association (TSPA) is pleased to announce that the 2024 Fleece Show will be held at Sheep Expo.
