Restorative Practices (Part 2)
Just like any healthy family, school, or community, Wildwood has a plan and process for restoring relationships when harm has been done. Just as students need coaching when they encounter academic challenges, they also need guidance for managing social difficulties when they arise.
We would like to share Wildwood's restorative process with you to make you aware of our school approach to managing conflict and to provide you with a research-based and time-proven model for restoring relationships that may help your family navigate the relational challenges that all of us inevitably encounter in our personal and professional lives.
- Identification and Ownership: The first step to restoring relationships is to identify the harm that has occurred and to help students take responsibility for their actions.
- Empathy: Next, it is important to recognize the impact of the harm that was caused. This piece is often difficult for students (and adults too, for that matter) to do without some assistance. It requires students to ask about, listen to, and reflect on the harm that was caused. While uncomfortable, it is an essential step to rebuilding compassion and trust.
- Restoration: During this step, students focus on repairing the harm caused by misbehavior. High expectations, clear norms, and boundaries are set. Amends are made at an age-appropriate level commensurate with the harm that was caused.
- Planning: This final step involves identifying ways to prevent similar harm from happening in the future. With guidance, students explore and select strategies and practices for managing emotions and handling difficult situations. Commitments are made and accountability structures are established.
Restorative practices are not a replacement for disciplinary action. Rather, they support students in rebuilding and restoring a sense of dignity and community, which when paired with measured, logical consequences, has a powerful effect on student success, well-being, and school climate.

UPDATE: Help Us Retain Our Crossing Guard – Walk or Ride to School!
As many of you noticed, the The City of Thousand Oaks sent staff to our Wildwood site this past Thursday (2/27) during drop-off and pick-up to count the number of people using our Arboles crosswalk. Thanks to our community effort, the number of families using this guarded crosswalk during February has been substantial, and the pedestrian count this past Thursday was high.
The City of Thousand Oaks may still be monitoring our Arboles/Velarde crosswalk usage in March, so we continue to encourage as many students as possible to walk, bike, or ride scooters to school and utilize this crosswalk in the weeks and months ahead.
Your participation helps demonstrate the importance of maintaining safe routes to school for our students. Thank you for your support in keeping our community safe and thriving!
STEAM Assembly Rescheduled - Please volunteer
Our STEAM Museum Assemblies at Wildwood Elementary have been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 26! This program will turn our multi-purpose room into a state-of-the-art, hands-on children’s museum focused on STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). Students will rotate through stations to experience robots, virtual reality, 3D printing, art, engineering, and more!
Every student will have the opportunity to participate in this one-of-a-kind experience, and we need parent volunteers to supervise some of these self-run stations at these assemblies. Please take a look at THIS form and consider signing-up to serve at one (or more) of our seven grade level assemblies.

Phone Call Protocols for Students
For safety reasons, students may ONLY call home from the front office phone or health office phone. Students with cell phones MUST have them turned off and kept in a backpack at all times during the school day. Students with watches that have text or phone capabilities should not communicate through them during the school day. Students who violate these standards of conduct will lose the privilege of bringing these devices on campus.
