Applications are now available on-line for the 11 Governor's Schools offered in Tennessee during the summer of 2018. Please click here for more information and to access the applications. Sophomores and Juniors are eligible to apply. Although the website states that December 1st is the deadline, all application materials (with the exception of the Governor's School for the Arts) must be turned to the Counseling Office by November 15th so that applications may be processed and sent to the individual Governor's Schools. Governor's School for the Arts applications are due on October 25th.

The PSAT/NMSQT will be administered on Wed., Oct. 11, to sophomores and juniors who have signed up and paid. There will be a limited number of extra tests available for juniors prior to the test date. Interested juniors should stop by the Counseling Office to sign up and pay $16 for the cost of the test. Quantities are limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis. For more information about the PSAT/NMSQT, please click here.

The following exams will be administered to all students in the following grades on Tuesday, Oct. 3rd:

Freshmen: practice Plan/ACT on Schoology

Sophomores: practice ACT on Schoology

Juniors: ASVAB

Seniors: ACT

The West High Counseling Office will be open until 6:00 pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month to offer more availability for parents who are not able to come in during the school day. Please call the Counseling Office at 423-581-1600 to make an appointment.

Juniors are invited to attend a regional college fair hosted by Carson-Newman University on Oct. 2. Juniors received permission forms in TNN. These should be signed and returned to TNN teachers by Friday, Sept. 29.

Any student graduating with a regular diploma from a Tennessee high school is required to take the ACT (or SAT) prior to graduation. All juniors will take the ACT at school on March 20, 2018. Registration for the state-wide junior ACT will take place during school. This ACT is offered free of charge for all juniors.

For students wishing to take the ACT on a national test date (see below - these are on Saturdays), students must register on-line at www.act.org. [Please note: students who qualify for free/reduced lunch may use a total of 2 fee waivers during junior and/or senior years to pay for the cost of the ACT (without writing). Students should see Ms. Davidson in the Counseling Office for a fee waiver].

The Work Ethic Diploma was first offered in the 2015-16 school year as part of a LEAP (Labor Education Alignment Program) grant. The standards that students are required to meet to earn the Work Ethic Diploma reflect the skills and characteristics that are needed for students to be college and career ready. More than 30 Lakeway region businesses and industries guarantee an interview to students who have earned the Work Ethic Diploma and who meet other job-related qualifications.

Students must wait until their senior year to apply for the Work Ethic Diploma. In the meantime, please click here to become familiar with the Tennessee Work Ethic Diploma standards and plan ahead to increase chances of earning this award.

College visits can be extremely helpful as a student is making important decisions about to which schools he/she will apply and eventually about to which school he/she will eventually commit to attending. College visits and open house events often give students opportunities to learn about the application process, available financial aid and scholarships, housing options, and academic programs/majors. Students will generally be offered a tour of campus which includes dorms, dining and recreation facilities, student centers, and academic buildings. Setting foot on a college campus and experiencing some of the same things experienced by the college's students can help high school students decide if the school is a good "fit".
