Macleans Primary School Community
Kia ora koutou Parents and Macleans Primary Whānau,
I trust this finds everyone well and enjoying this great week of weather so far! As I type this I have just returned from helping at the inter-school Y4-Y6 cross country. What a pleasure it was to help the team and cheer on the children as they ran, representing Macleans Primary so well! After the highs of the Kiwi athletes at the Olympic Games, it was certainly great to cheer on another group of Kiwi Athletes :)
While we are in the subject of achievements, please feel free to send me through any achievements of your children outside of school. They may have done well in sports, a cultural activity or anything where they displayed the Macleans Values. We love to celebrate our Macleans Primary student's 'in-house'' so don't be shy about sharing your child's achievements outside of Macleans Primary. Please share with me through my email me on m.cooke@macleansprimary.school.nz
Have a great week everyone.
Regards - Matthew Cooke

Is your Year 6 Child Going to BBI Next Year? A message from BBI
There could be a number of families have not yet registered their child's online enrolment yet. Legally, a decision on whether we accept any out of zone applications must be made by the end of this month. Closing date is September 4 - but we cannot accept any out of zone after this date. In saying this, we are crystal ball gazing trying to predict in zone numbers. So PLEASE i you are intending to enrol for BBI in 2025 please do so by August 23? This would be such a help with our online administrators and determine whether we need to take any more out of zone students.

Macleans Primary and Education Outside the Classroom
The learning does not just happen inside the classroom. Education outside the classroom (EOTC) brings the 'curriculum alive' is a catch phrase used by many teachers in the research to describe how EOTC experiences enriched their students’ learning. For teachers, it’s about taking the theoretical and abstract in terms of learning into the experiential and the applied. Where students get an opportunity to see, touch, feel and experience, there’s an embodied experience, a use of all the senses in the learning process, which in itself enriches the learning experience. Being there and experiencing the place and what it has to offer and what it is about in terms of the learning, also enriches the content. Those experiences can be very powerful – emotions are an important part of that learning process and that can be a really important part of bringing the curriculum alive. Macleans Primary believes that it’s important that students are enabled in multiple ways to develop their skills, values, competencies and capabilities – and that the learning process is well supported. Like learning inside the classroom, EOTC requires teachers to be attentive to student needs, providing good progressions, good scaffolding, clear learning intentions and clear processes around those.

Before and After School
Please do not send your child to school before 8:30 a.m as there is no supervision available at this time. Children arriving early will have to wait outside in the cold until the 8:30 a.m bell. If you require supervision before school, sKids offers an excellent before-school programme. We appreciate that our playground is a popular spot for families to gather after school. However, please be aware that there is no adult supervision on the playground during this time. For safety reasons, children should not be left on the playground unsupervised. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Year 6 Intermediate Visits
The Year 6s have had two great presentations from Howick and Somerville intermediates which gave the students information about what to expect for the exciting jump to Intermediate school.

Hauora and Well-Being: Measles - What You Need To Know (from the MoE)
Not enough New Zealanders are immunised against measles, which means there is a very high risk of an outbreak. The best protection against measles is two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine – free for all young people aged 18 and under in New Zealand and all adults over the age of 18 who are eligible for free New Zealand healthcare. The first symptoms of measles are fever, cough, runny nose and sore red eyes, followed by a red or dark pink rash typically starting on the face or behind the ears three days after the first symptoms before moving down the body. If you observe these symptoms, parents and/or caregivers are encouraged to contact their healthcare provider or Healthline on 0800 611 116 immediately. Access to My Health Record – Te Whatu Ora HERE
Please note that all staff at Macleans Primary are reminded to check that their own vaccinations are up to date. If anyone is unsure, it’s recommended that they get vaccinated. There’s no additional risk in getting an extra dose. Staff (and other adults) are reminded that they can check their vaccination records with Te Whatu Ora or by talking to their GP.
School Uniform
At Macleans Primary School our priority is the teaching and learning and well-being of all children. Within the day to day management and operation of the school to ensure successful teaching and learning and hauora for all children, we expect certain standards of behaviour and rules, including the correct wearing of uniform. All of the Macleans Primary School children look super in their uniform. Occasionally teachers need to remind children as to the correct wearing of a school uniform. Some of the 'regular reminders' are that children are NOT allowed to:
1. Wear a long sleeve undershirt under their short sleeve polo. There is a fleece available to cover arms or children can wear their long sleeve polo. The exception to this is due to recognised cultural or religious reasons.
2. Wear shoes that are not black. Shoes need to be fully black. They can be many styles - see below 'shoes 2024'
3. Wear Non-Macleans Primary hats and gloves. Hats and gloves can be worn to school on cold mornings, but once at school they are to be stored in the child's bag and not worn during the day.
From time to time children may not be able to wear the correct uniform. It is expected that children bring a note from home or email to the teacher explaining the circumstances and the timeframe needed to correct the uniform issue. We want to work with parents and support - just let us know. More information on uniform can be found on our school website: https://macleansprimary.school.nz/parent-information-2024/uniform. Macleans Primary School Uniform Policy/Procedure and uniform can be downloaded below.
