A Note From Principal Marwah
Dear LaGuardia High School Community,
Happy Lunar New Year to all who celebrate! As we welcome the Year of the Snake, we reflect on an extraordinary month of artistic achievement and remembrance at LaGuardia.
January has been filled with remarkable student performances that showcase our community's depth of talent and dedication. Our Musicale concerts demonstrated the developing excellence across our music ensembles, while the Semi-Annual Concert highlighted the power of cross-studio collaboration. The Drama scenes programs revealed the growing mastery of our young actors, and both the Winter Dance Showcase and Winter Gospel Concert moved audiences with their passion and precision. We were equally impressed by the innovative spirit displayed in our New Music Ensemble Concert and the harmonic excellence of our Winter Band Concert.
While we traditionally commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day during Yom HaShoah in April, we were honored to participate in the Holocaust Remembrance Event commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Five of our talented musicians - Becca Kolber (Flute), Deanna Sherman (Oboe), Valentine Rivain-Sauvage (Clarinet), Gavriel Carmi (Bassoon), and Diogo Muggiati-Feldman (Flugelhorn) - performed a moving rendition of John Williams' "Schindler's List Theme." Their powerful interpretation was a poignant reminder of music's ability to honor memory and inspire hope.
You can watch the performance here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qitW4--VcU
These performances, from joyous celebrations to solemn commemorations, exemplify our students' ability to connect with audiences through their artistry and to contribute meaningfully to our broader community. We are immensely proud of all our young artists and look forward to many more inspiring performances in the months ahead.
Warmest regards,
Principal Marwah

Spring Parent Teacher Conferences
The Spring Parent Teacher Conferences take place on Thursday, March 20 (Evening) and Friday, March 21 (afternoon.) We provided training for teachers this past Monday on using a Jupiter Grades meeting schedule function. Families would receive sign up inks from each teacher to their Jupiter Grades account.. The links will allow families to quickly select a time for their appointments. Within Jupiter Grades, a family would respond to 8 or 9 messages/invites from teachers. Once the appointment/conference is scheduled, the event is placed on your Jupiter Calendar, and it allows for changing or counseling appointments, too.
- What you can do now: make sure that your email and phone number are accurate in the NYCSA system. If you are a parent who lives with your child, or if you are a custodial guardian, you can update your own home, cell, and work phone numbers and email address of yourself or other additional adults on your child's record in your NYC Schools Account, using the Emergency Contact page.
- If you to set up your NYCSA, please contact Parent Coordinator Jerrianna Phenix.
- On a side note: If you need to change your (physical) address, you must submit two documents (see list of accepted residency documents.)
Actions and Inquiries Regarding ICE and Non-Local Law Enforcement Agents
We understand there is concern and uncertainty based on local and national news reports. NYCPS does not permit non-local law enforcement agents, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel, to enter schools—except when absolutely required by law. (Non-local law enforcement can be defined as any law enforcement agency that is not a New York City agency.)
Consistent with the rule of law, NYCPS must honor valid judicial warrants, court orders, and subpoenas. Because it is difficult for an untrained person to determine the validity of such documents, it is vitally important for school officials to show a copy of any warrant, court order, or subpoena to the DOE lawyer assigned to assisting LaGuardia before taking any action in response to non-local law-enforcement officials, including ICE personnel. Below is a summary of the protocol if such personnel request access to NYCPS facilities, students, or student records.
Read the Protocols for Non-Local Law Enforcement
If ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents approach you, you have rights! The NYC Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs has created "Know Your Rights" booklets in multiple languages to share information and resources if:
- ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents approach you
- What to do if your friend and family member is detained
- Sanctuary City Laws in New York City.
Read the Know Your Rights booklet.

LaG Students Commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau
A quintet from LaGuardia participated in the "HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE, Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau' on January 27, 2025, International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
PERFORMERS:
Becca Kolber, Flute
Deanna Sherman, Oboe
Valentine Rivain-Sauvage, Clarinet
Gavriel Carmi, Bassoon
Diogo Muggiati-Feldman, Flugelhorn
WORKS PERFORMED:
JOHN WILLIAMS, arr. C. CHRAIN: Schindler's List Theme
DIOGO MUGGIATI-FELDMAN: Night: Remembrances of a Genocide, for Wind Quintet
I. Funis carnifex - חבל של תליין
II. Requiem pro musico - רקוויאם למוזיקאי
III. Filii lacrimae - הדמעות של הבן
PROGRAM NOTES for Night:
The quintet was also invited to play an original piece composed by LaGuardia's Diogo Feldman. The Program Notes from the event discuss Feldman's Night: Remembrances of a Genocide, for Wind Quintet.
"I originally wrote this piece for a project at school to set music to a literary work. I chose Night by Elie Wiesel and decided to compose a dedicated triptych of études for solo trumpet. I have arranged this piece to the instrumentation of a wind quintet for this special occasion. Each movement of the work is meant to represent a scene from Night. The first, Funis carnifex, refers to the hanging of a pipel, a young male attendant to a prisoner functionary (oberkapo) at Buna, which Wiesel was particularly struck by (Chapter 4). The second movement, Requiem pro musico, refers to the death of a violinist, Juliek, who was said to have been playing Beethoven's Violin Concerto shortly before he passed (Chapter 6); the music quotes material from this same concerto extensively throughout. The final movement, Filii lacrimae, refers to the scene in which Wiesel's father perishes (Chapter 8) and features the motif of the Kaddish yatom. I hope that the audience is able to recognize the emotions and imagery which inspired the composition of this piece, and that this piece serves as an additional reminder of why we must remember our ancestors who were not able to escape the horrors of the Holocaust. The majority of my paternal family was murdered during this atrocity, including several individuals who ended up at Auschwitz. I am extremely grateful and proud that I am able to present this music here tonight with my classmates in the City Council Chambers."

LaG Debate Team Needs Judges. Can you help?
Did you know LaG has a wonderful, competitive, debate team? They have competed in many NYC Urban Debate League tournaments this school year and won lots of awards!
The club is in need of volunteer parent judges for its tournaments. No previous judging experience is necessary! Tournaments are on Saturdays, some are via Zoom, and some are in person. You can volunteer to judge just one or multiple tournaments.
In addition, many law firms and other outside organizations support this kind of volunteer outreach/community support. If you have any connections to groups who would do this kind of short-term volunteer work for LaG’s debate team, let us know.
If you are interested in finding out more about being a volunteer debate tournament judge or know of others who are willing to volunteer, please reach the club’s advisor Ms. Shelliann Roach SRoach2@schools.nyc.gov .
Thank you for supporting our impressive LaG Debate Team!
