Video Game Design Virtual STEM Camp for Military Dependents
Eligibility
- Rising 5th through 12th graders are eligible.
- Participants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent legal residents.
Is the gamer in your life curious about coding? Are they inquisitive and creative? Do they want to learn more about circuitry, engineering, and computer programming? Would they be interested in creating their own customized video game? Rising 7th-9th grade students are invited to join the scientists of the Army Research Laboratory as they dive into computer science and share their love for STEM during this Video Game Design Virtual STEM Camp! Find more information and apply here.
Contests
July 2024 Student Deadlines
Do you have a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader that’s interested in STEM?
Join our competition on July 27, where your child can show off their creativity to our judges. More info below, sign up here: tinyurl.com/STEMventure2024
Space Place art challenge prompt:
If you want to call your friend, you can probably just pick up a phone, select their contact info, and press “call.” But how would you call your friend if they happen to be a robotic explorer millions of miles away from Earth?
When scientists and engineers want to send commands to a spacecraft in deep space, they turn to NASA's Deep Space Network, or DSN. The DSN is an international array of giant radio antennas used to communicate with spacecraft at the Moon and beyond. Located in California, Spain, and Australia, the antennas of NASA’s Deep Space Network are a vital link to our robotic explorers venturing beyond Earth.
This month's prompt: If you were sending commands from Earth to a faraway spacecraft, or a robotic explorer on another planet, what would you tell it to do? Would you tell a space telescope to take a photo of your favorite star? Would you tell a rover on Mars to draw a giant heart with its robotic arm?
Draw an antenna on Earth, and the spacecraft or robotic explorer you’d imagine it would talk to. Use any materials you would like – crayons, markers, pencils, pens, aluminum foil, paint, yarn, or anything else you find. The sky's the limit! Get creative and submit your art before July 31, 2024.

Encourage students to work together in designing and constructing bridges using dry spaghetti and hot glue. The goal is to span an 18-inch gap and hold as much weight as possible before breaking. This engaging challenge promotes an understanding of structural engineering concepts, fosters problem-solving, and strengthens teamwork skills.
Build a Tower with an Egg on Top:
Challenge students to work in groups to design and construct towers that can hold an egg using limited materials, including paper, craft sticks, and tape. The activity emphasizes engineering principles and encourages creativity and problem-solving. Students can experiment with different tower designs, such as guyed, self-supporting, and monopole structures, while adhering to specific constraints.
Light Your Way: Design-Build a Series Circuit Flashlight:
Engage students in designing and building their own flashlights using materials like batteries, bulbs, and cardboard tubes. This hands-on activity introduces the basics of series circuits and electrical components, encouraging problem-solving and teamwork. Students explore the internal workings of a flashlight, draw their designs, and test their creations for functionality and reliability.
Spool Racer Design & Competition:
Inspire students to explore how potential energy can be converted into kinetic energy using the engineering design process. Acting as engineers designing vehicles, they use rubber bands, pencils and spools to explore how elastic potential energy from twisted rubber bands can roll the spools. Through brainstorming, prototyping, modifying, testing, and redesigning various iterations of the spool racer design, students aim to fulfill diverse design criteria, culminating in an exciting race competition.
