SMMS Weekly Update
March 15, 2024
Report Cards Delayed
The county delayed the distribution of printed report cards until next week due to technical complications.
In addition, next week we will be mailing home information for students who are in danger of retention this year.
LSIC Meeting
Next week, on March 20, we will hold our next LSIC meeting in the library at 3:00 p.m. All parents and guardians are welcome.
Please reach out to Ms. Greenfield with any questions or topics you'd like to add to the agenda at kgreenfi@k12.wv.us
Exploring the Civil War
Students in Ms. Gardner's classes had to "hunt" for eggs and inside each one had facts about the North/South/Border States and they had to research and organize each face into the correct category.
Supporting One of Our Own
As you may know, a member of our SMMS family, Scarlett Fuller, was diagnosed with a serious illness recently. In the coming weeks, you will notice we are going to be offering opportunities for our families to support her. So far, we have worked with community members to coordinate the following projects:
- Custom Bracelet: Bracelets have been arriving every couple of days and have been distributed during homerooms. Thanks to Mr. Bennett for donating the bracelets for sale.
- Leukemia Awareness T-Shirt: In the coming weeks, we will be pre-selling t-shirts, the proceeds of which will benefit Scarlett and her family. Each shirt will be $10. We would also like to take a school-wide picture once we all receive our shirts. Thanks to Mr. Clark for helping to organize this project.
Please demonstrate compassion and empathy as we take this journey together.
Wilson College Softball Cancer Awareness Fundraiser
Our very own Mr. Scheller is coaching at Wilson College and shared this opportunity as well.
- When: April 14th, 2024
- Where: Wilson College Softball Field (see map attached)
- What: Games begin at 1pm, pre-game honoring will begin at 12:30
We will be honoring Scarlett Fuller at the game, and she (or someone in her honor) will throw out the first pitch. She will also be serving as our team manager this year.

HPIC allows high school students to learn about careers in health care, engineering, technology, and science during a summer camp on Marshall University's Huntington campus. This camp will be offered June 2-27, 2024. Click here for more information and a link to register. The deadline to apply is April 4, 2024.
Community Send-off
This week, we participated in the community send-off for the SMHS Boys Basketball Team as they made their way to the state tournament.
Trying Stations in Math Class
This week, Ms. Skipwith introduced her students to station teaching. Using this model, she is able to design instruction tailored to meet specific student needs and promote student learning conversations and collaboration.
Readers' Theatre Performance
This past week, our Readers' Theatre group put on their first short play, Alice in Wonderland. Thanks to Ms. Posey-Blue for offering this club to our students.
Women's History Month
Thanks to a SMHS school student, Brianna Detzel, for helping us celebrate the ladies of Team 7 Red.
Celebrating Pi Day
On March 14, Ms. Yeargan demonstrated she is the biggest Pi Day fan in all of SMMS. Each year, math teachers revel in the significance of 3.14.
Reading Buddies at SMPS
This week, Ms. Cavagnaro's classes visited SMPS to read to our future SMMS students. It was a great experience for all of the students involved.
