Attention Current 7th Grade Families
In the coming weeks, Norton Middle School will begin creating student schedules for the 2025-2026 school year. This process includes looking at information to determine who may benefit from participation in Algebra I in eighth grade. Several criteria are used in making this determination, including cognitive ability scores, achievement scores, performance on state’s math assessment, attendance during the 2024-25 school year, and identification as gifted in math and/or superior cognitive thinking. Additionally, we will be using the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test to provide further information about student readiness for a high school-level course in eighth grade. It is important to note that taking Algebra I in eighth grade is also the start of a student’s high school G.P.A. and transcript.
If you would like your child to participate in the Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test, please complete this permission slip and return it to the middle school counselor, Dr. Russo, by Tuesday, April 29th. Hard copies were sent home with students today. Permission slips must be returned by this date. The test will be conducted on Tuesday, May 6 from 2:45-4:00 at Norton Middle School (room 116) Please make arrangements for your child to be picked up promptly at 4:00.
More information about accelerations in math, including the district’s rubrics for placement and a graphic outlining the math pathways available in our middle and high schools, can be found on the district’s website.
This opportunity is open to all current 7th-grade students who are not currently on an accelerated math track.
Taco Bell and Student Safety
We want to take a moment to share an important message regarding student safety in our community. It has come to our attention that a new Taco Bell restaurant is rumored to be opening nearby in the coming weeks. While we are excited to welcome a new business to the area and support local establishments, we also want to be proactive in addressing concerns related to student safety.
As the new restaurant is located across a busy street, we are strongly urging families not to allow students to walk to Taco Bell or any off-campus establishments after school. These areas are beyond school grounds, and once students leave campus, we are unable to monitor or ensure their behavior or safety.
We kindly ask that parents continue to utilize our designated carpool lanes or school transportation options for dismissal. These systems are in place to provide safe and efficient ways for students to travel to and from school.
For families whose children walk home, we encourage you to have conversations with your child about pedestrian safety. Please remind them to:
Use only designated crosswalk
Press the pedestrian crossing button and wait for the appropriate signal before crossing
Avoid distractions such as phones or headphones when crossing streets
Our goal is always to prioritize the safety of our students while maintaining positive partnerships within our community. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation in helping us keep our students safe.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
