Week Five- Community
9/8/2024

This week, in conversations with faculty about setting goals as part of their state requirements, I was reminded how essential goal setting is—not just for educators, but also for students. It’s a strategy that unlocks potential and leads to success. Later, while talking with students at lunch, I was impressed by how clear and confident they were about their goals. These students with defined goals are excelling academically, proving that this simple practice can benefit every PHS student.
Goal setting is a highly effective way to boost academic success. Clear, measurable goals give students focus, motivation, and ownership of their learning. By setting both short- and long-term goals, students can break tasks into manageable steps, making progress more rewarding.
I encourage you to work with your child to set specific academic goals, whether it’s improving a grade, staying on top of assignments, or dedicating time each day to reading or studying. Help them set SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Check in regularly to track their progress, adjust as needed, and celebrate milestones along the way.
Goal setting also teaches important life skills like planning, perseverance, and self-regulation. It fosters a growth mindset—the belief that intelligence and ability improve with effort—which helps students see challenges as opportunities for growth.
For example, your child might set a goal like, “By the end of this month, I will raise my math grade by practicing 30 minutes each evening.” Celebrate the small wins and encourage them to stay focused and determined.
In short, setting high expectations and encouraging goal setting is a powerful way to help your child succeed both in school and in life.

A Reminder About Student IDs
At Pearland High School, student safety is our top priority. Wearing IDs is an important part of keeping our campus secure, as it allows us to quickly identify who belongs in the building. This is why wearing an ID is a key part of our school dress code, and every student has been provided with one.
Tomorrow, we will be conducting a check to ensure all students are wearing their IDs, so please help us by reminding your student to wear theirs at all times.

Additionally, on the same day, all sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSAT. There is no need to register for this exam, as it is automatically arranged for these students.
