YOUNG GEORGIA AUTHORS WRITING COMPETITION
Unlike many writing competitions, YGA does not provide a prompt to which students must respond or provide any other boundaries to their genre choice or creativity beyond a 1900-word maximum length. This is original work that a student creates without the help of others.
Entries must be typed or handwritten on 8.5 x 11 paper, one-sided. This cannot be work that has previously been published.
Entries may include:
● Short Stories
● Poetry
● Essays/Literary Criticism/Analysis
● Journalism
● Academic/Research Reports
● Personal Narratives
● Any other original student writing
This contest is open to any student currently enrolled in a GCPS school, grades K -12. Schools will conduct a schoolwide contest, forwarding a package of the school’s winning entries (no more than one winner per grade level) to the Language Arts Office for judging. Entries submitted by students, parents, teachers, or others will not be accepted. All entries are due to Lisa Healey by November 22nd, 2024. A committee will select winners to represent our school.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Our students in grades 1-5 are participating in the FIT Georgia physical fitness assessment. Please click here to learn more about this assessment and how you can support your child's personal fitness.
MEDIA MATTERS
Reading Challenge
The next challenge starts Oct. 31 and will focus on the Georgia Picture Book Awards. Students will watch a read aloud of the books and answer 2 questions abou the content. They will then decide which book they liked the most and vote for it. Their votes will be combined with students across Georiga to pick a Georgia Picture Book winner.
Students will use Beanstack to enter their information. The reading challenge will run from Oct. 31-Nov. 29. Use the links below to learn how to use Beanstack and to access the website. These links are also on the Gwin Oaks webpage.
There will be 5 Reading Challenges throughout the year. Students will have the opportunity to earn up to 30 badges. Students who earn at least 26 badges will attend a Glow in the Dark Party in May.

VISITOR LUNCH SCHEDULE
CAR RIDER
Morning Car Rider Reminder
Each morning - car rider drop-off begins at 7:30am. We request you enter the car rider line no earlier than 7:30 am and no later than 8:05 am. This is the time frame during which the line will be moving for arrival and ensures that your child will not be tardy for school.
Each afternoon - please remember to have your car rider tag displayed every day during pickup. It should be visible in your window from the time you turn onto Gwin Oaks Drive until your child is safely in the car. This number helps our staff on Gwin Oaks Drive collect numbers efficiently and the staff at the pick up location need the numbers to make sure they have students ready to enter the car.
