The 8th Grade BBQ is Next Weekend (9/14)
The tradition of the 8th grade BBQ is back! This year's BBQ will take place on the Deal Field on Saturday, September 14th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This is a fun, easy event and a great way to build relationships with students and families early in the school year. All 8th grade students, families, and teachers are encouraged to join, even if it's just a quick roll-through on your way to brunch, soccer games, or however else you plan to spend the weekend. This should be fun and easy for everyone!
We need your help! If you are able to support by volunteering, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040449A8AC23A2FD0-50439912-2024
Our goal is for every 8th grade student to join, so please add this easy, fun event to your calendar. We look forward to meeting you soon!
8th Grade Student Council Elections
Student council elections are coming soon! Students will learn more about the student council election process in their Individuals & Societies (history) class next week. All students interested in running for office should plan to attend an interest meeting in Mr. Boyd's room (W305) at 3:25 PM on Monday, September 16th.
8th Grade School Pictures - 9/27
Dress your best on Friday, Sept. 27th, as that will be 8th grade picture day!
Students will take their pictures during their science period.
World Language Trip Meeting
Deal will host an interest meeting for families in-person at Deal at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, September 25th.
Sign-up information will be shared in the coming weeks. These trips have limited space and are first come, first served, so we encourage families to sign up once the links are shared.
As part of Deal's commitment to inspiring excellence, curiosity, and compassion in our students, Deal Middle School will once again plan optional international trips as a supplement to our world language program. 8th grade students enrolled in Spanish, French, Chinese, or Spanish Humanities will have the opportunity to join their designated trip. These trips are entirely optional, funded by families, chaperoned by Deal staff, and open only to 8th grade students in good academic and behavioral standing. We find these trips to be a power experience for all involved, and we are truly grateful to the teachers who make this experience possible.

Ms. Thompson: Science
Last week in science (9/09-9/13), we practiced writing a testable hypothesis and testable question. Students also learned how to analyzed data sets in order to identify an outlier and calculate the mean without an outlier as well as uncertainty (range divided by 2.)
Within the next 5 days, the following grades will be entered into Aspen:
IB Formative B- Scientific Method
IB Formative C- Best Fit and Uncertainty
Each grade will be placed in the practice and application category.
Next week:
Monday (9/16) students will review both formatives and practice sorting the independent variables into categories. Then, they will determine if an experiment is a "fair test".
Tuesday (9/17) briefly review "controlled experiment and fair test." Students will then begin to complete IB Summative Assessment B/C-Scientific Method and Best Fit/Uncertainty.
Wednesday (9/18)-students will complete and turn-in their summative assessment.
Thursday (9/19)-Friday (9/20) students will complete BOY MAP Assessment in Science
The homework is to complete the summative study guide on Monday evening.
What is needed for my class:
EVERYDAY: Pens/pencils (I have no preference of color or type of pen or pencil), composition notebook
- HAVE READY IN YOUR LOCKER: Ruler, calculator, colored pencils
Ms. Walters: History
Last week students were able to finish learning about 4 specific Native American tribes prior to European Colonization. Students then explored the reasons that Europeans countries wanted to explore the "new world". Students analyzed various sources about different interactions between Native Americans & European countries. Students needed to determine whether these interactions were models of conflict or cooperation. Students ended the week discussing African Kingdoms prior to European influence and the Columbian Exchange & Triangular Trade.
Next Week:
- Monday: African Resistance
- Tuesday: Native American Resistance
- Wednesday: Timeline of Interactions
- Thursday: Formative Organizer - Conflict/Cooperation
- Friday: Work Day Timeline & Formative Organizer
Ms. Cunha: English
Next week in ELA, students will read the Act 1 Scene 1 of A Raisin in the Sun. Students will analyze the scene to determine each character's approach to achieving their version of the American Dream and the barriers that may be preventing them from reaching it. Students will also continue to build on their narrative writing skills through an in-depth focus on identifying an author's/character's point of view and practicing matching that in a continuation of a particular moment within a text. Students will take a Formative Assessment on Thursday, September 19th which will ask them to continue a scene from A Raisin in the Sun from a chosen character's point of view using sensory language and descriptive details to create an engaging narrative. On Friday, students will visit the Deal library to pick out independent reading books.
Reminders:
It is recommended that students purchase a copy of "A Raisin in the Sun" to use both in class and at home. See link below for the correct version of the text to purchase.

Summer Reading assignments can be submitted in class or via email (catherine.cunha@k12.dc.gov) before September 20th, to earn credit.
Ms. Anderson: Math
Algebra 1
This past week, Algebra 1 students completed their MAP diagnostic test. Students in 6th period were able to take their first quiz for the course, while students in 1st period will take this quiz on Monday. Students are encouraged to use their interactive notebook as a guide to help them review pertinent information. This coming week students will begin to study systems of equations with two variables. Our class will focus on solving systems using substitution, elimination and graphing. A link to our current unit can be found here.
Math 8
This past week in Math 8, students took their iReady assessment. We also reviewed the information that may have been forgotten regarding the three different types of transformations. Students also completed two Desmos activities and played a game of "golf". This game was a soft entry into the next part of our unit, sequences of transformations. This coming week students will formally explore sequences of transformations and be given an assignment on tessellations. A link to our current unit can be found here.
Remind
It is very important that you and/or your student subscribe to my Remind Alerts. I will be sending out a message sometime on Monday reminding kids to bring pencil, paper and a notebook to class. Remind is how I communicate information to students about their homework. Notices go directly to their phone and are mainly received through a text message (or the app if you download it from the Google Play Store or the App Store). At times I will also attach the assignment in Remind as well. The other useful quality of Remind is that students can ask questions through the app about their homework. These questions go straight to me, so there is no need to feel embarrassed about asking a "dumb question". Most of the time students just need a quick point in the right direction to finish their homework.
If you are not currently receiving Remind notices from me (I've sent several), please make sure you join the correct class by clicking on the link below. You can sign up to receive messages through email, or as text messages through your phone.
