Attendance Matters at Cold Water!
For the month of November, Cold Water Elementary's Average Daily Attendance (ADA) slightly improved to 92.17%. Our overall goal is to achieve 95% for the month of December. However, our Proportional Attendance decreased. Early dismissals and late arrivals have an impact on our attendance as students are missing out on instructional minutes. Please make every effort to ensure your child is at school for the duration of each and every school day. We can do it! In order to make this happen, please view the following tips:
What can you do to support your child's good attendance?
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before
- Arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes early
- Don't let your child stay home unless he/she is truly sick.
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to the teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make him/her comfortable and excited about learning.
- Develop a back up plan for arriving at school if something comes up. Call on family member, neighbor, or friend to help.
- Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
Why does attendance even matter?
- Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10% can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help catch children up.
Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!
Winter Weather Guidelines - Wear Coats to School!
The Hazelwood School District follows the following procedures and guidelines for children participating in outdoor activities during cold weather.
The Building Administrator must monitor the temperatures, including the wind chill factor, and can use discretionary judgment when determining whether to modify outdoor activities when temperatures are above 20 degrees, including wind chill.
Guidelines for Recess and Physical Education (PE) outdoors for the general student population:
• If the temperature, including wind chill, is below 20 degrees, children should stay inside.
During cold weather, improperly clothed children should not be allowed outside for recess or PE.

Taking Timeout to Talk and Listen to Students about Fighting and Bullying
In 4th and 5th grade, we will be pausing curriculum on Tuesday morning from 9:10 - 9:40am. We will be discussing Happiness! We will be focusing on promoting Happiness in school. Please talk with your child about how feeling happy can help us reduce fighting and bullying in school.
Cold Water AMI Plan
In the event that the district announces that we are going to utilize an AMI/Inclement Weather day, your child will need to do the following:
Students will need to access their assignments for the day through their homeroom’s Google Classroom. Your child’s teacher will contact you regarding assignments and where to find them. ***If your child would have gone to Galactic on the AMI day, they will log into their Galactic teacher’s Google Classroom. You can message me or your child’s Cold Water teacher’s at any time using DOJO or their email.
Students will have the ability to check in with their teacher at two scheduled times below through a Google Meet. Your child’s teacher will be available throughout the day for support through email. This will be accessed through their teacher’s Google Classroom.
Finally, go play! Drink Hot Chocolate! Bake cookies with an adult! Be a kid on a “Snow Day!”
If you need assistance with internet connection at your residence, please contact the main office at 314-953-4150. Please do this ASAP as nobody will be at the school to assist on an AMI day.
Chromebook Tips
- Keep your Chromebook on a flat surface like a table or a desk. (Don't leave it on the floor where someone could step on it.)
- Don't pile things on top of your Chromebook.
- Make sure there isn't anything on the keyboard when you close your Chromebook.
- Keep food and drinks away from your Chromebook and make sure your hands are clean. (Crumbs and liquids are very bad for your Chromebook and can cause it to stop working properly.)
- Be careful how you carry your Chromebook. Make sure your Chromebook is closed, always use two hands, and never carry your Chromebook by the screen.
- Keep it charged. Plug it in when you are not using it so that it will be charged and ready when you need it.
- Tell your teacher right away if it breaks. Don't try to fix it yourself.
- Remember to take care of yourself online too. Stay on approved websites, keep your password private, and log off when you're done. Remember anything that happens under your account is your responsibility. Always remember the importance of digital citizenship!
