Parent/Teacher Conferences - February 27th & 29th
Parent/Teacher Conference Format Details:
Conference dates will be February 27th and February 29th from 3:00 - 6:30pm each evening. If you are unable to schedule a conference on one of those evenings, teachers will work with you to arrange an alternate time.
In-person Conferences and Virtual Conferences will be offered each night. Please do your best to start and end each conference on time. Teachers have been encouraged to set a timer to proactively stay on pace.
In the past we have held half the conferences in person and half virtual. Based on the fall conferences, approximately 65% preferred in-person conferences. To better meet your needs, our time slots will reflect 65% in person and 35% virtual each night. We will begin with virtual conferences on Tuesday and in person conferences on Thursday.
Virtual Conferences will be held through Google Meet video conferencing. You are welcome to use your child’s device to access Google Meet.
Prior to the conference, the teacher will send you a Google Meet link or code to use for the virtual conference.
When it is your time to meet, just click on the link or enter the access code and you will be able to talk with your child’s teacher(s) regarding his/her progress and how you can continue to support learning at home.
We will use SignUp Genius to schedule conferences. Please click here to access the SignUp Genius. SignUp Genius will be live from February 16th through February 21st.
If you are unable to find a conference time, please contact the teacher directly to make arrangements for a mutually convenient date/time to conference. Please don’t feel the need to meet with each teacher but rather schedule with those you feel that you need to connect with.

Bay View's Patriot's Pen Essay Winners 2024
Each year, nearly 68,800 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1.4 million in state and national awards. Each first place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000!
The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.
At the local level, students have the opportunity to win up to $250. The Duck Creek VFW runs this essay contest each year. This year’s theme was, “How are you inspired by America?” The winners were announced at a ceremony at the VFW.
Bay View Patriot's pen winners are Kaydence Moore, Carmeron Janczak, (both pictured above) and Andre Rodriguez and are going to be honored at the school board meeting on March 11th.
Congratulations to all the writers!
Donate Life Walk - April 13th
A Small Dot ... Makes a BIG Difference!
The Student Leadership Donate Life Committee at Bay View appreciates the fact that the HSSD community has supported the NEW Donate Life Walk for 11 years running! We have raised THOUSANDS of dollars for Donate Life Wisconsin thanks to you. This year, we are reaching out once again and asking you to join us at the 12th annual NEW Donate Life Walk on Saturday, April 13th at Bay View Middle School.
The need for organ transplantation or organ donation is always unexpected and we all believe it will never be us. However, all you have to do is look around the HSSD community to note that MANY members have a connection. Come join us on April 13th to raise awareness and money to help others going through this process. If you can’t join us for the Walk and Silent Auction, here are some other ways you might be able to help:
Distribute the poster you see to the left to businesses around the HSSD area and beyond. (Contact us at newdonatelife@gmail.com and we’ll figure out how to get them to you!)
Solicit donation items for the Silent Auction from your family and friends who own businesses. Click here for access to our Interest Donation Letter.
Donate money on our website. We will be providing T-shirts to every registrant, as well as food and drink at the finish line. All of these items will call for financial support.
Spring Incoming Freshmen Athletic Meeting - April 24th

Bay View Literacy News - The Art of Talking Back to Books
In the realm of literature, the relationship between reader and text is often portrayed as a one-way street: the author imparts knowledge, the reader absorbs it. However, there's a growing movement that challenges this notion, advocating for a more interactive approach to reading. This practice, often referred to as "talking back to books," fosters critical thinking, deeper understanding, and personal growth.
At its core, talking back to books is about actively responding to what you read. It involves asking questions, making comments, and forming opinions as you progress through the text. Rather than accepting everything at face value, readers are encouraged to challenge ideas, explore alternative perspectives, and connect the text to their own experiences.
One of the primary benefits of talking back to books is its ability to enhance comprehension. By actively engaging with the material, readers are more likely to retain information and grasp complex concepts. When readers pause to reflect on what they've read and articulate their thoughts, they solidify their understanding and develop a deeper connection to the text.
Practicing talking back to books doesn't require any special skills or equipment; all it takes is an open mind and willingness to engage. Here are some strategies to incorporate this practice into your reading routine:
Ask questions: As you read, don't hesitate to question the author's assumptions, motivations, and arguments. Consider why certain choices were made and how they impact the narrative.
Make connections: Relate the text to your own experiences, other works of literature, or current events. Drawing parallels between different sources can enrich your understanding and offer new insights.
Take notes: Jot down your thoughts, reactions, and observations as you read. Whether in the margins of the book or in a separate notebook, writing down your reflections can help you organize your thoughts and track your progress.
Discuss with others: Engage in discussions with fellow readers, either in person or online. Sharing your interpretations and hearing others' perspectives can deepen your understanding and challenge your assumptions.
In conclusion, talking back to books offers a powerful way to transform reading from a passive activity into an active dialogue. By engaging with the text critically, personally, and empathetically, readers can deepen their understanding, sharpen their thinking, and foster personal growth. So, the next time you pick up a book, don't be afraid to speak up and join the conversation.

DigiKnow: Promoting Digital Wellness at Home
Creating a safe and balanced digital environment is critical to our children's well-being in today's ever-connected world. Two important aspects of this are:
- Screen time, the amount of time spent on devices
- Content filtering, which controls the materials accessible to them
This resource aims to provide insights and options that parents can explore at home, allowing them to tailor their child's digital journey with confidence. Additionally, parents are invited to stop down in the Bay View LMC anytime during parent/teacher conferences on February 27th and 29th where Bay View's Technology Integration Specialist, Kelly Koller, will be available for questions or support. You do not need to make an appointment. If you are unable to attend parent/teacher conferences and would like support regarding setting up content filtering and device management at home, please contact Kelly over email at kellkoll@hssdschools.org.

STUDENT PICK-UP PROTOCOL
If you are picking a student up during the school day, you must come into the main office and sign the student out with your Driver's License. If someone other than you or your emergency contacts is picking up your student, please contact the office to let them know who is picking your student up. Students are not allowed to leave during school hours via bike or walking without prior approval from the main office and Principal.
HEALTH ROOM PROTOCOL
If your student is not feeling well, they need to follow protocol and come to the health room to report their illness prior to contacting home. Students should not be using their iPad to email a parent or texting a parent to pick them up. This will eliminate the spread of illnesses to other students and will make the office aware of students being picked up prior to parent arrival.
