Surfside Shark Bites
Week of November 12-15, 2024
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Good afternoon, Surfside families!
It was a great week at Surfside with lots of neat things going on. Our soccer team just wrapped up their season by taking 1st place in the finals tournament, our basketball season just now started with practices, our elementary independent study students are engaged in all kinds of fun learning activities, our middle school just moved rooms to the growing enrollment, and our high school students are making great strides in their courses.
If your student needs academic support or tutoring please know help is available through the free online tutoring system provided by the state of California. This is a great resource and very helpful for students needing assistance. Also, it's available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
For students enrolled in Surfside High's direct instruction, please know that we are in the second half of the quarter. This leaves just enough time to complete any outstanding assignments in order to bring those grades up. Please remind your student to attend every class, every day, and get that work done. Of course, we are here to help should questions arise or if help is needed.
Thank you and have a great weekend!
Principal Frandsen
Weekly Construction Update
New OUSD Report Card System
This shift to digital grade access offers several benefits, including:
Environmental sustainability: Reduces paper consumption and waste.
Faster access: Parents can view grades immediately upon release.
Improved communication: Provides a centralized platform for parents to access student information.
Cost savings: Eliminates printing and mailing expenses.
To support this transition, we have taken the following steps:
Parent Resources: The IT department has created a series of instructional videos to guide parents on navigating the Aeries Parent Portal and accessing report cards.
These videos are available at https://bit.ly/ousdparentportal
These resources can also be found on the ITS webpage at www.oside.us/departments/information-technology-services-its/aeries-parent-portal.
Families can download these reports via Aereis. Please see the instructions below:

Meet our PASS Mentor, Kali Felty and Social Worker Intern, Erika Matlala
Kali Felty - On Wednesday, November 13th, in celebration of World Kindness Day 2024, I teamed up with Seaside Flowers, a local business, to bring a little joy to Surfside High School. Thanks to their donation of flowers, we were able to hand them out to students with a special note: "Take a flower & give it to someone you care about to brighten their day!" This helped to spread kindness and positivity throughout the school, encouraging students to share the flowers and brighten each other's day.
Erika Matlala - The grateful grams are part of a school activity I hope to facilitate throughout the school year at Surfside. This activity is intended to build community and give the student population something fun to look forward to. Many kids have filled out these grams for their friends and teachers, with a message on why they're grateful for them. The grateful grams are to be delivered during 5th period the week before Thanksgiving break. I hope to facilitate these holiday themed grams for winter break as well.

Shark Nibbles…K-5th Updates
Dear Families,
It has been another wonderful week of learning and growing. Students are showing character traits of perseverance, dedication, and hard work as they continue to work on their packets and learn the necessary concepts. Please encourage your child to make as many connections to their learning as possible. In addition, many students want to skip doing math because it’s not easy or it might not be easy to understand as parents. Perhaps, watching videos online can help, or tutor.com is a great resource. Also, the Oceanside libraries have tutors available for additional support.
Art Challenge:
There are multiple ways for students to explore the arts. Maybe it is drawing, painting, singing, dancing, acting, Legos, building, crafts, etc. Find something for your child to try that allows them to express themselves.
Important Dates:
Nov 25-29: Thanksgiving Week (No School)- No Virtual or In-person
Dec 2: Author Visit @ 10am (in Room K-2)
Dec 6: Turn in Unit 4
December 23-Jan 10 Winter Recess (No School)- No Virtual or In-person
Middle School News
Middle School…
It was an exciting week as Middle School moved to a new room! Our new room is almost double the space, is adjacent to the basketball courts with increased outdoor space and near the Middle School restrooms.
Next work turn in: December 6, 2024
Time is flying by…
The Study Sync ELA Progress marker test will begin December 2. This test does not require a District device or a monitored session. It is, however, required by the District to be completed.
End of Semester Notes
The Semester officially ends on December 20, 2024. Courses must be completed by December 18, 2024, to allow for final grade calculations.
The Semester 2 Study Guide workbooks will be available no later than January 13, 2025 to coincide with the start of Semester 2 courses. We will notify families if workbooks are available before break for pick up.
Winter Break- 12/23/24 - 1/10/25
Semester 2 begins 1/13/25
Please monitor your students coursework to ensure they are on pace to complete their courses on time. Students who are unable to stay on pace and/or fail to meet other Independent Study requirements (timely work sample submission, P.E. logs, P.E. assignment completion, check-in requirements) will result in notification of failure to honor the Master Agreement. Compliance is required to remain in Independent Study. Remember, parents/families are the primary learning coaches for their child in an Independent Study program. Additional tutoring is available free of charge at the Public Library, and through Tutor.com.
We appreciate all our hard working & amazing Surfside Families!

New District Cell Phone Policy
"During the Day, Off and Away"
To create a focused learning environment and support student mental health, Oceanside Unified School District will now require all student cell phones to be off and stowed in backpacks upon entering campus and remain off until leaving. Exceptions are made for students with IEPs or 504 plans if specified for medical or anxiety-related needs, as determined by site administration. Classrooms have landlines for students to contact parents if needed, and students will have access to their phones during emergencies. The policy aims to reduce distractions, enhance engagement, and prevent cyberbullying, while also reducing the risk of phone theft or loss. Support and disciplinary actions for policy violations could include warnings, phone calls home, and phone confiscations, with increasing consequences for repeated offenses. OUSD is committed to student safety and mental health, fostering academic and emotional growth. For more details, refer to OUSD's Handbook.
