What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
I'm currently reading 'One Perfect Couple' by Ruth Ware. Imagine if Agatha Christie wrote a fictional season of 'The Bachelorette.' Five couples are invited to a remote island as part of a reality tv show with vague details about the premise for the show. They know there will be one individual winner; however, it's unclear whether the prize is monetary or not.
The first few chapters are separated by 'Mayday' calls on a radio, hinting that tragedy strikes. It's fast-paced and light, with plenty of mysterious character backstories to keep me hooked. Check it out if you're looking for a tropical thriller. It currently has 3.68/5 stars on goodreads.com.
Happy reading!

Famous Sorcerer Solomon is mysteriously but gruesomely murdered in his home workshop. His teenage apprentice, Tabatha Zeng, had just seen him alive and well the previous evening during her lesson. Unfortunately, the local detective immediately suspects Tabatha, as well as the sorcerer's youngest son, Callum. Desperate to prove her innocence, Tabatha teams up with the youngest Solomon boy in order to find the true killer and clear their names once and for all. However, the suspect list contains some of the most famous and powerful magic wielders of the Solomon family. Tabatha also has to deal with the nagging question: how much can she really trust Callum Solomon when everyone close to the slain sorcerer has a motive? 9/10, would recommend. I really enjoyed the book but felt it was a little anticlimactic.

VPL Note: We have 'The Cutting Season' available in large type, and 'Bluebird, Bluebird' and 'Heaven, My Home' available in regular type. Locke's third book in the Highway 59 trilogy, 'Guide Me Home' is on order and will be available soon.
Attica Locke is a NY Times best-selling author whose sixth novel Guide Me Home, the finale of her Edgar-Award winning Highway 59 trilogy, joins Bluebird, Bluebird and Heaven, My Home in September 2024. She is also the author of Pleasantville, winner of the Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction and long-listed for the Bailey’s Prize for Women’s Fiction; The Cutting Season, winner of the Ernest Gaines Award for Literary Excellence; and her debut Black Water Rising, which was nominated for an Edgar Award, an NAACP Image Award, as well as a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and was short-listed for the Women’s Prize for Fiction. A former fellow at the Sundance Institute’s Feature Filmmaker’s Lab, Locke is also a screenwriter and TV producer, with credits that include Empire, When They See Us and the Emmy-nominated Little Fires Everywhere, for which she won an NAACP Image award for television writing. She co-created and executive produced an adaptation of her sister Tembi Locke’s memoir From Scratch for Netflix. She is currently in a multi-year development deal with Universal Television, working on adaptation of her Highway 59 series, among other shows.
