Hello McPherson Families,

This week, we have Picture Day for Kindergarten through 5th grade classes on Tuesday, September 10. Elementary students may wear free dress on Tuesday for picture day. Middle school students already took their pictures and will have a make-up day later in October.

Also, Monday morning at 9:00 am registration for our afterschool Enrichment "ELOP" classes will be available. Please see the newsletter for the schedule of classes and process for registration. Classes begin the week of September 16.

McPherson will be offering a number of before or after school enrichment opportunities this school year through the Expanded Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP). The grant provides funding for enrichment classes to qualifying students. Students qualify based on family income level, English Learner status, or homeless/foster youth identification. The classes are open to other students at no cost as well but qualifying students will have priority enrollment. All students will be waitlisted to allow for qualified students to have priority. Parents will be sent a confirmation email if accepted into the class.

Registration will open on the ELOP website on Monday, 9/9 at 9:00 am. Also, many classes will be repeated throughout the year so there will be another chance to take a class if you have a conflict on a particular day or if the class is currently full.

Thank you to the amazing team of 57 volunteers who pitched in to help at the Foundation Wristband Booth at the Orange Street Fair! It was a great success and the Foundation brought in over $2,000 in tip donations because of you!

We are excited to offer math tutoring BEFORE school for all middle school students on Thursdays and Fridays (starting September 5). This is a great opportunity for students to get extra help with math assignments, prepare for tests, or simply improve their math skills. No sign-up necessary. These are drop in tutoring sessions.

When: Every Thursday & Friday morning from 7:15am to 8:00am (Starting September 5)

Where: Mr. Castro's Room #107

Who: Any 6th, 7th or 8th grade student

McPherson is participating in Start with Hello Week on September 16 – 20. During Start with Hello Week we will engage in school wide activities and opportunities that encourage everyone to build a welcoming school culture. Please look at the schedule below, as well as the attachment for more information about our activities during this week.

Monday, September 16 – Hello Day! Greet people by their name and say HELLO!

Tuesday, September 17 – Post-It if it’s Positive Day! Leave a positive message for someone on a Post-It Note in class.

Wednesday, September 18 – Wear Green Day! Wear Green to promote Unity and Inclusivity.

Thursday, September 19 – Mix it Up Day! Play with someone you do not usually play with and make a new friend.

Friday, September 20 – Random Acts of Kindness Day! Do something kind for someone at school and encourage others to do the same.

At McPherson, we value a partnership with parents and families and we want you to take an active role in your child's education. We do have an expectation that every family will contribute ten hours of volunteer time every year. There are many ways to volunteer throughout the year but if you intend to volunteer on campus during the year (classroom help, parties, field trips, etc) we must have you complete OUSD's volunteer application. You can complete this now and it will be good for the entire school year. The majority of our campus volunteers will be working 5 hours or less on campus so you will only need to complete the requirements listed under #1 and #2 on the links below. Please call the office if you have any questions regarding the volunteer application process.

We will be selling ice cream beginning Monday, September 9. Ice Cream will be sold at the FRONT GATE ONLY, at 2:00 pm and at 2:55 pm. We have a new ice Cream Vendor, Andrades Fruit Filled Bars. Andrades has been making delicious, high-quality, fruit-filled ice bars and ice milk bars since the 1940's. Students will be able to choose from over 7 natural flavors of fruit-filled ice bars and milk bars, and they have the highest quality ingredients. Stop by and purchase some "Yummy" Ice Cream Bars for only $3,00 per bar, to help support students overnight trips in 6th through 8th grade.

On Thursday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m., El Modena High School welcomes you to Fred Kelly Stadium for Feeder School Appreciation Night as the El Modena Vanguards play varsity football versus Segerstrom High School.

Tickets will be available on Monday, September 9th, in the McPherson office by request only. LIMITED TICKETS, ONE PER ADULT.

Each ticket is valid for one student and one accompanying adult. It is highly encouraged and recommended that all students are accompanied by a responsible adult at the football game.

We look forward to seeing you all at this fabulous community event on Thursday, September 12, at 7:00p.m. at Fred Kelly Stadium.
