The Heart of Haleiwa
February 2025
Essence Week
From February 10th through February 13th, Haleʻiwa Elementary celebrated Essence Week, a special time dedicated to promoting the values of our school. Throughout the week, students engaged in activities centered around the themes of love, kindness, and respect. To make the celebration even more vibrant, students were encouraged to wear specific colors: Red for love, Yellow/Orange for kindness, and Green for respect. Activities included creating “What We Love About Haleʻiwa Elementary” paper flowers, sending Kindness Grams, crafting School-Wide Heart Pictures, and participating in Campus Beautification Day. It was a joyful week filled with positivity, school spirit, and a strong sense of community!
Haleiwa Elementary School Robotics
Congratulations to our Robotics team, the CaneFires, for their amazing performance at the state competition this month!
Our 6th grade team won the Teamwork Challenge for the 4th year in a row, earning a spot at the WORLDS competition in Dallas, Texas. After three intense overtime rounds, they triumphed alongside their partners, the Manoa Green Tigers.
The 5th grade team earned the "Build Award" for their strong, reliable robot.
A huge thanks to Coach Jared Haiola for his incredible leadership. We’re so proud of all our students for representing our school with honor and teamwork. Best of luck at Worlds!
4th Graders - Kaiaka Park
The 4th Graders went on a fun, hands-on field trip to Kaiaka Park and learned that Haleʻiwa was once a fishing village! We imagined what Hawaiʻi looked like before modern contact. Then, we gave our respects to the ocean and land with our ʻOli. Kumu took us to the ocean where we were given our ipu and cleaned the ipu with our hands, saltwater, and sand. It was a very fun, hands-on learning experience where we connected to Hawaiʻi and our special place, Kaiaka Beach!
Haleiwa Elementary Community Based Learning Site Field Trip: Kokua Farm
Kokua Foundation is a valuable community-based learning site, and Kokua Farm serves as an inspiring educational and agricultural destination, encouraging learners of all ages to actively support local food systems. Students from grades K through 6 at Haleʻiwa Elementary have been visiting this local gem. On February 20, 2025, our 3rd grade classes had the exciting opportunity to visit Kokua Farm and met Kokua Foundation co-founder and recording artist, Mr. Jack Johnson! We look forward to continuing our partnership with Kokua Foundation for many years to come!
Perfect Attendance Lottery for January
Congratulations to Gr. K Kalea and Gr. 4 Murphy for winning the Perfect Attendance lottery spin for the month of January! Be here every day, Hale'iwa is the way!
Haleiwa Elementary School’s “Click It or Ticket” Campaign
The "Click It or Ticket" school campaign at Haleʻiwa Elementary School was a significant event aimed at educating students and their families about the crucial importance of wearing seatbelts. On February 21, 2025, students worked alongside the Honolulu Police Department to raise awareness within the Haleʻiwa community about the life-saving benefits of buckling up.
A special thank you to Mrs. Yamakawa (Curriculum Coordinator) and Mrs. Yonamine (School Counselor) for their dedication and efforts in organizing this important campaign. Their collaboration with the Honolulu Police Department ensured that the event was both informative and impactful, creating a lasting impression on students and the broader community about the importance of always wearing seatbelts.
Waialua Complex Fitness Festival
On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, the Waialua Complex Fitness Festival was held at Waialua District Park. Waialua High and Intermediate School's (WHIS) PE teacher, Mr. Kositwongsakul, along with high school student volunteers, led fun and engaging physical fitness activities for 3rd through 6th grade students from Waialua and Haleʻiwa Elementary.
In addition to the fitness activities, students were taught hands-only CPR by Waialua Complex nurse, Carrie Alexander. To conclude the event, all students enjoyed delicious and healthy fruit smoothies.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Yvette Ikari for her help in organizing the event, to Mr. Kositwongsakul, Carrie Alexander, all the volunteers, and the Principals — Mrs. Christine Alexander (WHIS), Mrs. Varissa Pata (Waialua Elementary), and Mrs. Malaea Wetzel (Haleʻiwa Elementary) — for their support in making this event engaging and meaningful for all the students!
Complex Area Superintendent Muh's Visit to Haleiwa Elementary School
On Thursday, February 27, 2025, we had the honor of welcoming Complex Area Superintendent (CAS) Muh and his District Team to Haleʻiwa Elementary. During their visit, CAS Muh and his team visited our Robotics program, observed classes from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, and explored our ʻIwa Essence Store. It was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the ways we are engaging students in academics, social-emotional learning, and extracurricular activities. We are incredibly proud of the work being done at Haleʻiwa Elementary!
