Notes from the WGIS Principal
November 8, 2024
Message from the Principal
Dear WGIS Families,
November is off to a great start at WGIS! We started our second marking period which means grades for our firts marking period have been submitted and will be available to parents and student via SchoolTool at 5pm today (Friday). Our grade reporting at WGIS is on a 4 point scale and is based on how students are performing on targeted NYS learning standards. Any student that scores a "3" or better has achieved proficiency on that standard. A "2" would indicate that a student is close to proficiency but just needs a little more time.
When you look at the report card, I would encourage you to look at it as a momentary snapshot of how your student is performing relative to the standards they are working on this year. Standards being assessed now will continue to be assessed moving forward and our goal for all students is to continue to grow throughout the year. If you have any questions regarding grades, please reach out to your students teachers for clarification.
As always, thank you for your continued partnership with our school to make sure all of our students find success at WGIS. We are having a great school year and are looking forward to a great November!
Be Kind-Work Hard-Think BIG!
It's a great day to be a wildcat!

Cereal Drive for WGIS Student Council
Student Council is having a Cereal Drive. Please send in unopened boxes of cereal to donate to local food pantries for those in need. Did you know that cereal is one of the most sought after items but also one of the least donated?
Positivity Paws & SEL @WGIS
This year, we will be using Second Step to promote positive character traits in our students here at WGIS. Each week, we will focus on a new character trait. Students who exemplify the character trait of the week will have an opportunity to be recognized on the Friday announcements and be featured in our weekly e-news.
This week, we recognized students that showed integrity throughout the school day. Next week, we will focus on supporting others. We will be on the lookout for students showing support for others as they go throughout their school day.
Positivity Paw Winners
This week, we recognized students who showed integrity throughout the school day . Congratulations to Andre, Michael, Gavin, and Aluel our Positivity Paw winners !
Themed Fridays
Our student council will be putting on a "Themed Friday" each Friday. This past Friday, student council hosted a favorite school or college!
Next Friday (11/15) student council asks that everyone wear Pajamas. This is will also be supporting Paiges Pajamorama which is a district wide initiative across all of our schools, supporting pediatric cancer patients!
Donate $1 and wear PJ's for Pediatric Cancer!

Change in weather
As our seasons change, please make sure students are prepared for the colder weather. We will continue to take students outside as long as it doesn't get too cold in mid winter. Coats and jackets are essential to making sure students stay warm and safe. If you are ever in need of assistance to make sure you child has a coat or jacket, reach out so we can help!
WGIS PTA
Please join us for the next PTA meeting on Wednesday, 11/13/24 at 6 pm in the WGIS library. All are welcome. This is our last meeting until January.
The PTA fundraiser ends today, 11/8/24. It has been a great success! Thank you to all the families that participated to support our school! If you have paper order forms that didn’t make it to school today, please contact Carla Overton as soon as possible at Cboverton@gmail.com or 315-771-0843.
Amazon Wishlists
Each year, we invite the teachers to submit an Amazon Wishlist that will be shared with the school community. These items are used to support and enhance instruction for our children throughout the year. The teachers and staff are so appreciative of the support. This is a way to show our gratitude for their efforts each day with our children. The links to the wishlists can be found here: https://2cde.edulnk.com/e/3z0w8/k8Kfdj?__$u__
Book Swap
We are preparing for our annual book swap. This event occurs in the spring and is quite popular with our students. If you have any books (appropriate for students 9-12 years old) that you are done with, you can send them in with your student or drop them off at the main office. We also collect adult books and keep those separate for the teachers and staff. We need about 2000 books to ensure this event is a success!
Join the PTA
Lastly, the PTA would love your support! There is no commitment to participate in any meetings or events, but your $10 membership helps us ensure that we have the funds to continue the events that support our school community. You can join here: https://2cde.edulnk.com/e/3z0w8/faYJmN?__$u__
