Your Weekly Update from Wilson Middle School

December 6, 2024
Principal's Message
Hello Wilson families,
We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. It was nice to have a few extra days to spend time with family last weekend.
Coming back this week, the students started Trimester 2. All students had new schedules with some new classes for their "specials." Please note that with Trimester 1 behind us, the grades and comments are now available in PowerSchool for viewing. See the item below for instructions and key points to focus on with your child.
Please make every effort to read the items below. We try and highlight important items that are happening in our school every few weeks. We look forward to the next two weeks of learning before we head into the winter break and new year.
Viewing Trimester 1 Grades and Standards Grading in PowerSchool:
Trimester 1 Grades and comments are open to families in PowerSchool. Please use this link to read how to access your child's Grade 5 ROSP and Grades 6-8 Report Cards.
These reports are an opportunity for you and your child to celebrate their successes, reflect on their progress, and identify areas where improvements can be made for the next trimester.
We encourage you to take some time to review the report card together with your child. Discuss the following:
- Successes: What subjects or skills are they excelling in? Celebrate their hard work and achievements!
- Opportunities for Growth: Are there areas where they may need extra focus or support? Talk about steps they can take to improve.
- Goal Setting: Set specific, achievable goals for the next trimester to help your child stay motivated and on track.
By engaging in this conversation, you’re helping your child take ownership of their learning and reinforcing the importance of their effort and dedication. If you have any questions about your child’s report card or would like additional resources, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their teachers or school counselor. Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education. Together, we can help them succeed and thrive!
What I Need (WIN): RTI/Enrichment Cycle 1 Recap:
As we approach the end of this RTI (Response to Intervention) cycle, we want to thank you for your support and partnership in your child’s academic journey. The goal of our RTI/Enrichment block is to ensure every student receives the individualized support or enrichment they need to thrive.
For students receiving intervention, the focus has been on building essential skills through targeted interventions tailored to their specific needs. For those in enrichment, the goal is to provide opportunities for deeper exploration and growth.
At the conclusion of this cycle, we will review student progress and adjust supports or enrichment opportunities as needed to continue helping each child achieve their full potential. We will begin the second cycle of RTI/Enrichment during the WIN (What I Need) block in early January.
If you have questions about your child’s progress or the next steps in this process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their team leader or me. Thank you for being a vital part of this system and for supporting your child’s success!
Traffic and Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders:
It is important to follow the traffic flow in the morning when dropping off your child. Drive slowly and carefully. This is a large school with many people walking, riding bikes and driving into the school parking lot. We need your full attention, patience and cooperation to keep things running smoothly. It is not okay to drop your child off in the parking lot. It is not safe.
When picking up, you need to cue up near the gymnasium sidewalk when it is your turn. Again, please be patient and drive slowly when you are on the school property.
Attendance:
Consistent attendance and arriving to school on time are essential for your child’s success. Being present and punctual ensures they don’t miss important instruction, helps them stay connected with their peers, and builds lifelong habits of responsibility and commitment.
We appreciate your support in helping your child be in school every day and ready to learn! We understand that life is busy and unexpected situations arise. However, we kindly ask families to make every effort to ensure that students are present at school whenever possible. Missing even a few days can disrupt a student’s learning and make it harder for them to stay caught up, particularly in middle school, where lessons build on one another and absences can lead to gaps in understanding.
We also ask that you avoid scheduling vacations or other discretionary travel during the school year. While we value the importance of family time, missed school days can be difficult to make up and may impact your student’s progress.
If your child must miss school due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances, please notify the school as soon as possible and work with teachers to ensure they stay up to date on missed assignments. Asking teachers to provide work ahead of time for a trip is not a reasonable request, and it is impossible to "make up" what is missed in a class period.
Thank you for your support in prioritizing your child’s education. Together, we can help them achieve their full potential.
Attendance Highlights:
Attending school is your child's JOB!
Students need to be in school for academic & social emotional success.
Let’s partner - Schedule a meeting with us to discuss how to best support your child in school!
School Communication:
- At 5 absences: School counselor/nurse will email or call families to check in
- At 10 absences: Vice-principal’s will reach out to families.
***View the visual below with some facts about absences.
Required Yearly Forms:
Important required yearly forms are needed at the beginning of every school year.
These forms ensure that parent/guardian contact information is up-to-date, as well as other pertinent health information.
Please complete these forms as soon as possible on your PowerSchool parent portal.
If you are having difficulty accessing your portal, please contact PowerSchool support at pssupport@natickps.org
We will send out the newsletter every two weeks.
Respectfully,
Teresa Carney

Healthy Harvest
Healthy Harvest was a success! Thank you to everyone who generously donated to our annual food drive. We are also thankful to our Student Council members who partnered with our Student Services team to make this year one of the best ever. The Natick Service Council food pantry provides much needed assistance to our local families and Wilson’s Healthy Harvest is historically their largest donation of the year. This year, Wilson families donated over 7,600, beating our goal of 7,000! While Healthy Harvest is a friendly competition among our homerooms (shout out to Mrs. Waldron’s for being the big winner!), the students and faculty are keenly aware of the true reason for this important drive. In this season of celebration and festivities, we are truly grateful for all of the students and their efforts to give back to our community.

Three Things You Need to Know This Week
1.Paper - On-Demand Tutoring:
Natick Public Schools is excited to announce our partnership with Paper for on-demand tutoring for NHS students. Paper is a secure, online tutoring service that provides students with unlimited, 24/7 academic support. Whether they’re stuck on homework, studying for a test, or need someone to read and make suggestions to their essays, there will always be experts available online to assist students in over 200 subjects and more than 4 languages.
Paper tutors have been specially trained to conduct expert, academic support in a secure, chat-based platform. With a commitment to helping students learn, they’ll never give students answers, but rather interact with them in an encouraging tone to lead them forward.
This is a free service that we’re providing, so students are encouraged to use it as much as they need, whenever they need. Our teachers also have accounts and will be able to review all student activity to see what they’re working on and provide more targeted instruction as needed.
If you’d like to learn more about Paper you can sign up for a Paper hosted Parent Info Session, available in both English and Spanish.
To see Paper and the help it offers firsthand, we encourage you to login with your students. To get started, simply visit PAPER’s student login page, type your school’s name, and log in via Google using your school credentials.
We’re thrilled to offer our students the unlimited, 24/7 support that Paper provides and we can’t wait to see what we’re able to accomplish together.
