Meet our Staff
Sean Harrison - Counselor
Hello Makalapa!
My name is Sean Harrison or as the students know me as, "Mr. H". I am the school counselor for Kindergarten, Second Grade, Fourth Grade, and Sixth Grade. This is my second year at Makalapa, and I have enjoyed all of my short time here. What I enjoy most about Makalapa is the community feel, staff, and of course the students! We have a great team that works here, and we will do our best to do what is best for your keiki, and Makalapa! If anyone wants to talk about anything feel free to say hi, hope everyone has a safe and wonderful holiday season!
- Mr. H
Chess Club
Checkmate! Our school's Chess Club meets every Monday and Friday after school from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. in I-Building. We host up to 40 students from grades 3 through 6. The chess coaches, Mr. Au and Mr. Yanos teach basic chess strategy and etiquette. Students learn visualization, problem-solving skills, and patience through gameplay. Makalapa Elementary is sponsored by Chess For Success located in Portland, Oregon. The program provides our school with chess boards and club T-shirts.

Road Safety
Crosswalk safety
The crosswalk in front of Makalapa can be a busy place in the morning and afternoon. A couple of parents have given us feedback about some dangerous incidents they have seen at our crosswalk that connects Makalapa to Foster Village. Admin has spoken to HPD about this safety hazard, they are still waiting for HPD to approve funding for a crossing guard. We would like to remind everyone to:
1. Wait for the "walk" signal before crossing.
2. Use a nice walking pace, please don't run.
3. Be aware while in and around all crosswalks, eyes up, phone down.
U-turns prohibited in front of the office
Our administration has recently had a couple of concerns from parents and staff about cars u-turning in the Makalapa parking lot, in front of the office. Even though it does take longer, we would like to kindly ask everyone who uses our lot to follow the flow of traffic all the way around.
