LHS Families, Students, and Staff,
It feels like fall and there’s no better way to celebrate the season than to share gratitude for Autumn Leaves, especially as performed by the LHS Chamber Choir. We hope you enjoy the incredible gift of music!
Our MYP Accreditation visit is scheduled for November 6th & 7th and our teachers and counselors led by VP Steve Pape and Instructional Specialist Emily Hensley have been working hard to complete and submit unit planners focused on student inquiry aligned to content standards, with the MYP Approaches To Learning (ATL’s) and assessment strategies clearly communicated. Thank you to LHS parent volunteers who will be joining our school’s interview process. Fingers crossed!
We are grateful to Rotarian PeaceBuilder Al Jubitz who is funding an important trip where LHS students to represent PPS/Portland at the International Youth Nuclear Peace Summit at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, Canada, November 7th & 8th. The conference supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals #16 (Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions) & #17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Our team will be joined by Dr. Steven Nakana, a Rotary Foundation World Peace Fellow. He holds a PhD Degree in International Studies from the Graduate Institute for International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland and is currently the PCC Director of DEI and is a former Senior Program Officer at Mercy Corps in the Youth and Conflict Management Program. Thank you to LHS Vice-Principal Travis Johnson who will serve as the LHS delegate lead supporting ambassadors from our LHS Brothers of Color racial affinity group at this international event. Go global-minded BOC Cards!
As we near the end of the first quarter we want to re-emphasize the importance of daily attendance and being on time and fully present for each class period each day. Our LHS Student Engagement Coach Edwina Koch has been working closely with students and staff to create attendance rewards, celebrations, and safety nets. Please help prioritize daily on time attendance. You can find more information about PPS’s policies at the PPS Attendance Handbook. “We all have a role to play to increase regular attendance. That's why we're talking with families and caregivers,” ODE Director Dr. Charlene Williams said in August. “Every Oregon student has the potential to feel the joy of learning and sense of belonging that comes with attending school. Please join us in supporting the Every Day Matters Campaign
PPS is hosting a series of events that focus on Belonging, Equity & Inclusive Practices where we will screen powerful, award-winning documentaries that will stir, provoke, and challenge each of us about what is possible in the systems we create for our children with disabilities. As part of this series, we are excited to welcome you to a live virtual event, Including Samuel, on Monday, October 28 at 5:30 PM at OMSI Empirical Theater. The event will include a screening of Dan Habib’s film, “Including Samuel,” and a conversation with him and his son, Samuel. Full announcement HERE.
“We Go Together” at LHS and we hope everyone enjoyed the 77th annual PopCycles Variety Show. If you missed it, here's a video of the grand finale performance, sung by the combined LHS Choirs. The performing arts are alive and well at LHS! Thank you to our Theater, Band, and Choir Directors, student performers, and parent volunteers.
Go Cards!

If the sponsor is not a teacher, the project must have a teacher as a co-sponsor. Application and eligibility information is available on EPA’s PEYA page.

Staff ShoutOuts
Physics teacher Dave Valenzuela ran the 2024 Portland Marathon this month, finishing strong! Mr. Valenzuela also established a new LHS partnership with MD PATHS (Promoting Aspiring Teens in Healthcare Studies), an OHSU student interest group dedicated to fostering the aspirations of young individuals interested in pursuing careers in healthcare. MD PATHS is committed to promoting awareness and understanding of the journey to medical school among high school students. Their mission is to inspire students to pursue careers in medicine by providing them with insights and guidance from those currently navigating the path to becoming healthcare professionals. They organize informative panels featuring medical school students who share their personal experiences, insights, and advice on the application process and the diverse opportunities within the field of medicine. These panels serve as a valuable platform for demystifying the journey to medical school and addressing any misconceptions or barriers that may exist. Way to go running and partnering. We appreciate you Mr. Dave Valenzuela!
Give Marisol Kreuzer a high five! Her classroom project "Chromebooks in the Classroom: Empowering Students for Academic Success!" was recently funded.
