Definition of TDV
Teen dating violence is defined as the physical, sexual, psychological, or emotional violence within a dating relationship.
What causes the abuse?
Teens may abuse their partners for multiple reasons:
- They believe that they should have all the control.
- They feel like they have to use violence to get what they want.
- They can blame their abusive behavior on drugs and alcohol.
Red Flag Warnings
- The first warning is that you are not officially in the relationship. Just because he/she sends you gifts or you stay at their house on some nights, it doesn't mean that they are your girlfriend or boyfriend.
- Paying attention to the small things your partner does, for example; your partner is coming to pick you up be he/she stops on the way to get a treat for themselves but doesn't think to bring you anything. In other words, your partner is being inconsiderate.
- If something is important to you but not to your partner it is ok. However, your partner should still support you anyway instead of not wanting to be their for you.
- Your partner is criticizing you and calling you names. This is a big hint that your relationship is not going to work out.
- Another red flag is that he/she is accusing you of being unfaithful. If there is no real reasoning behind this accusation, then your partner is probably hiding something. They will accuse you because they don't want to be the only one cheating.
