Dorr Families,
Welcome back! We hope you had a great winter break to rest and recharge! The next 3 months are big academic months for your student. Students will be able to show all that they have learned on their NWEA testing. Please make sure that your student is getting a good nights sleep each night and that they are eating a healthy breakfast in the morning.
Students seem to be settling into the routine at school very nicely. Now is a good time to review school rules and expectations with your student. We appreciate your support at home!
These winter months can seem long, but they are also filled with learning, discovering and "Snow" much fun!
Warm Winter Regards,
Mrs. Seniura

Dear Dorr Elementary Families,
I am thrilled to share some wonderful news with you about the positive behaviors we've been seeing at school! This year, our students have truly embraced our core values, showing kindness, respect, and responsibility each day. It’s inspiring to see how they support one another, take pride in their learning, and contribute to a welcoming school environment.
Our staff has been intentional in recognizing and celebrating these positive behaviors, and we’re proud to see students stepping up to be role models in our community. From helping friends in the classroom to showing respect during instruction, these everyday actions are making a big difference.
We will continue to acknowledge these positive behaviors throughout the year through our School Wide PBiS and Capturing Kids Hearts. A bulletin board in the hallway highlights our students modeling our school expectations. When you are in the building be sure to check it out!
Thank you for your continued support in encouraging these values at home. Together, we are helping our students grow into thoughtful, responsible, and caring individuals.
Warm regards,
Chistina Johnson
Assistant Principal

Simply click the button below to be re-directed to the on-line registration form. Paper registration forms will come home with your child upon their return in January. *PLEASE NOTE: ONLY STUDENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED THE REGISTRATION ONLINE OR HAVE TURNED IN A PAPER REGISTRATION FORM WILL BE SEEN.
Distinguished Artist - Maverick Bouwman
Dorr Elementary has a Distinguished Artist Program in which student artwork is on display like an art gallery for the school year. Each year 9 students are chosen as a Distinguished Artist. The distinguished artist is a student who is responsible in art, shows their creativity and works hard
on all projects. Ms. Corcoran chooses 3 to 4 pieces of artwork in which the students followed directions and completed the project adding their creativity. A committee of staff members then votes on the projects to choose the winner.
Congratulations Maverick Bouwman!
In kindergarten art we read the book “Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister. We drew and painted our own rainbow fish and added a few shiny scales. Maverick’s painting turned out great! He used many different colors. Maverick always takes his time on his artwork. Maverick is also a very kind and considerate student. Thank you Maverick for being such an outstanding art student!
Outstanding People In Education
Dorr Elementary is lucky to have some of the best staff members around! Why not recognize them by nominating your favorite staff members for the "Outstanding People In Education" award! It's that time of year again, the Allegan County School Board Association is accepting nominations for the "Outstanding People for Education" award! The purpose of this award is to recognize and honor people in education who are excelling in their field and/or are making an impact in the quality of education in Allegan County.
Examples of whom to nominate could include: a teacher, classroom aide, administrator, secretary, board member, volunteer, bus driver, custodian, support staff, social worker, therapist, consultant, community member, or anyone who supports education.
Nominations can come from anyone (students, parents, school staff and community members) and can also be kept anonymous.
The nomination process will look a little different this year, but it will be much simpler. Please click the link or scan the QR code in order to access the Google Form. Nominations are due by Friday, February 28th, 2025.

Lost and Found
It's the time of year that our lost and found areas start to grow! If anything in these pictures look familiar, feel free to come on down and take a look!
In a school of over 300 kiddos, there are bound to be look alike items. You may consider labeling your students items with a sharpie. This will help our staff reunite lost items with their owners!

Sledding Break!
Students have been doing a phenomenal job showing what they know on their Winter NWEA testing. Mrs. Licari's 3rd graders took advantage of the snowy playground with a sledding brain break!
Watercolor & Salt Art
In first grade we painted snowy backgrounds using watercolor sprinkled with salt. Then we used oil pastels to draw a penguin and add it to our painting.

My Child Is Sick. What Do I Do?
The cold and flu season is approaching. Dorr Elementary is already seeing an influx of sickness in the classrooms. Please help us stop the spread of these nasty viruses by following these guidelines.
- If you need to call your student in ill, it is helpful if you give a brief list of symptoms, rather than "my student is sick". Reporting symptoms helps us identify possible outbreaks.
- Please keep your student home if they have a fever. Students are welcome to return to school once they are fever free without medication for 24 hours.
- Please keep your student home if they are vomiting or have diarrhea. Students are welcome to return once they are vomit/ diarrhea free without the use of medication for 24 hours.
Attendance Questions Explained

Please contact Food Service for questions.
Students are expected to be in their seats, ready to learn by 8:50am each day. Students who arrive AFTER 8:50am but BEFORE 9:05am will be marked as AM TARDY. Students who arrive AFTER 9:05am will be marked as 1/2 day AM ABSENT.

Students who are absent will be coded as follows:
Unexcused absence: Students who are absent for illness or other reason, and parent has notified the office will be marked as unexcused absence. The reason for absence will be noted.
Unknown absence: Students who are absent and the office has received no communication from parent/guardian will be marked as unknown absence.
Excused absence: Students who are absent and return with a doctors note that includes the dates/times the student is to be excused, will be marked as excused absence.
Students who obtain 5 & 7 unexcused or unknown absences during the school year will receive a letter from the school bringing the absences to your attention.
Students who obtain 10 unexcused and/or unknown absences during the year will be asked to meet with the principal and may be subject to truancy. Wayland Union Schools district policy outlining attendance can be found in the student handbook.
