Overview
8 Standards for Mathematical Practice
Alongside the PA Core Math Standards, Common Core has also developed 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice that we seek to develop within our learners. Learners are required to think, reason, and communicate in the math classroom. This requires high-quality tasks and questioning strategies so that learners behave like mathematicians. Check out the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice --
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Digital Resources
Many teachers across the district utilize digital resources to help learners learn, practice, and review math skills. Some of the digital resources you may see our learners using are eSpark, First in Math, Splash Learn, XtraMath, 99Math, CK-12, Seesaw, BrainPop Jr., Prodigy, FogStone Isle, Boom Cards, and many more! Facilitators also have access to both print and digital resources through McGraw Hill's Reveal Core Math Program.
Badging & Personalization through Self-Paced Progressions
Just like in ELA, kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders are empowered to develop as learners through badging. As children master skills, they add to their collection of badges. This information is communicated to guardians regularly and guardians are provided with resources to support their child. Some teachers have created self-paced math progressions where learners can move at their own pace through a progression of skills.

Kindergarten -
Numbers and Operations - Counting & Cardinality - How do numbers help us understand the world?
Numbers & Operations in Base 10 - How do you use place value to compose and decompose numbers within 19?
Operations & Algebraic Thinking - How can objects be used to show the joining and separating of groups?
Geometry - How do we identify geometric shapes and figures using their attributes?
Measurement & Data - How can we best show data and what can we learn from it? Why do we measure?
Numbers and Operations - How are numbers used in everyday life?
Algebraic Concepts - How can I use properties of addition and subtraction to solve a problem fluently?
Geometry - Why are attributes important in identifying geometric shapes? How can we name part of an object or collection of objects as a fraction?
Measurement and Graphing - How do we measure? Why do we measure things? How are graphs used every day to display and compare information, identify patterns, and predict trends in data?
2nd Grade -
Numbers and Operations - How are numbers ordered, represented, and related to all other numbers? How can I use properties of addition and subtraction to solve a problem?
Geometry - Why are attributes important to identifying geometric shapes? How can fractions be used to name a part of an object or part of a collection of objects?
Algebraic Concepts - How do we fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/ or the relationship between addition and subtraction?
Measurement and Graphing - How do we measure? Why do we measure things? How are graphs used every day to display and compare information, identify patterns, and predict trends in data?
3rd Grade -
Math instructional time focuses on five critical areas:
(1) developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100
(2) developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1);
(3) developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area; (4) describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes; and
(5) solving problems involving measurement and estimation of intervals of time, money, liquid volumes, masses, and lengths of objects.
4th Grade -
Numbers and Operations - Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers.
- Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.
Number and Operations Fractions - Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.
- Find equivalencies and compare fractions.
- Use operations to solve problems involving decimals, including converting between fractions and decimals (may include word problems).
Algebraic Concepts - Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems.
- Gain familiarity with factors and multiples.
- Generate and analyze patterns.
Geometry - Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.
- Understand concepts of angle; measure and create angles.
Measurement and Data - Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit.
- Represent and interpret data.
